The Amen That Landed on Nothing

This message is for the woman who said amen at the end of a prayer she meant completely and felt precisely nothing afterward, who needs to stand on a state her feelings have not caught up with

She said it out loud, which is not what she usually does. She was on her own in the house and it seemed like the kind of thing that should be said out loud, so she sat at the kitchen table with her hands flat on the wood and she said the whole thing, properly, start to finish.

She meant every word. That is not in question and it has never been in question.

And then she said amen, and she sat there.

Julia is forty three. She waited about a minute, which felt longer, and then she got up and put the kettle on because sitting there was starting to be a thing she was doing rather than a thing that was happening.

She had not expected fireworks. She wants to be clear about that with herself, and I want to be clear about it here, because she is not a silly woman and she was not looking for a light show. She thought there might be something. A settling. A weight going. Some small internal confirmation that the transaction had gone through.

There was nothing. Not a bad nothing. Just the kitchen, and the fridge doing its noise, and the same person she was at nine o'clock.

She believes God heard her. If you asked her flat out she would say yes. She teaches a class on Thursdays.

She just cannot find any difference.

Now this article is for you if that is your kitchen. And the first thing I want to hand over is that a verdict is a different kind of object from a feeling, and expecting the second to arrive as proof of the first is not faith, it is a category error, and it has been quietly breaking honest people for a very long time.

The Amen That Landed on Nothing

Remember is a covenant verb

Here is the promise, quoted in Hebrews out of Jeremiah.

And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

Now, everybody reads that as memory, and every honest person then runs into the same wall: God knows everything. He cannot mislay information. So what could it possibly mean for Him to not remember something?

The wall goes away as soon as you know what the word does in covenant language.

To remember, in that world, is not to have a fact available. It is to act on a thing. When Scripture says God remembered somebody, it never means He had briefly lost track of them and it came back to Him. It means He moved. He acted. Remembering is the beginning of doing something about it.

So will I remember no more is not a claim about God's memory at all. It is a legal undertaking. It means: I will not act on this. Not now, not on a bad Thursday, not when it comes up again in your own head at two in the morning. The file is not being erased. The file is being permanently declined as a basis for action.

You are covered by an undertaking about what God will do rather than a claim about what He can recall. Hebrews 10:17 uses the covenant verb, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written undertaking and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it registered at a kitchen table.

And notice how much steadier that is than the version most people are carrying. If it were about memory, a person would spend their life anxiously wondering whether something had surfaced again. An undertaking is not like that. An undertaking is a commitment held by the one who gave it, and its stability is His.

You have a commitment standing over you whose stability sits entirely on the one who made it. It is written as a promise and not as a description of a mental state, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written commitment into a life, which is why it holds in a room where nothing at all is happening.

Who is named as the witness

Now here is the part almost nobody notices, and it is two verses up.

Before the writer quotes that promise, he says the Holy Spirit is a witness to us, and then he gives the quotation. The Spirit is introduced, by name, as the one testifying to this specific thing.

I want you to feel how deliberate that is. The writer could have simply quoted Jeremiah. Instead he says: the one testifying to you about this is the Spirit of God, and now here is what He is saying.

Which means that the confirmation you were sitting at the table waiting for has a name, and it is not a sensation. It is a person, and His testimony is the words on the page, and He was doing His job while you sat there feeling nothing.

You were being witnessed to at that table, by name, and the testimony was the promise rather than a feeling about it. Scripture introduces the Holy Spirit as the witness two verses before the quotation, and the same Spirit is the one testifying to it inside a person now.

I want to put something here in the middle, plainly. If the sitting at the table has stretched into something heavier, if the nights have gone long, or if the thinking has traveled past disappointment and out toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Call your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let a human being be in it with you. That is not a lesser move than prayer and it is not a fault in your faith. God has always worked through people, and one across the table from you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

A verdict is not a sensation

Here is where I want to be careful, because this is the place articles like this usually make a promise they have no right to make.

I am not going to tell you the feeling comes later. I have no idea. It might. It might not, and it might not for a long time, and a great many faithful people have lived long good lives without the internal confirmation they were told to expect.

What I am going to tell you is that the feeling was never the receipt.

A verdict is a public fact about your standing, held outside you, unaffected by your weather. A feeling is an internal event with its own causes, most of which have nothing to do with theology and quite a lot to do with sleep and blood sugar and what the week has been like.

Asking the second to certify the first is like asking your mood to confirm your address.

You are forgiven as a matter of fact, and the fact has never once been in the business of producing evidence for itself in your chest. It is written as an undertaking and it does not report on anybody's feelings, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a kitchen where nothing is moving.

And one more thing, and I want to say it directly to the person who has quietly concluded they must not have received it. Nothing about the flatness is evidence against you. It does not mean you prayed badly, or lacked something, or need to go back and do it again more sincerely. There is nothing to redo.

You received it, and the absence of a sensation is not a defect in you or in what you received. The written promise attaches no feeling to itself anywhere, and it is His Spirit and not your capacity to notice Him who makes a given thing actually given.

The breakthrough

Here is where it turns, and it is a small turn about which object is load bearing.

Stop asking your chest to countersign. Not because the flatness is wicked, and not because you should feel more than you do. Because the thing you have been asking it to certify was never issued in that currency.

You are clean, this morning, and the amen landed on a fact rather than on a feeling. Hebrews 10:17 promises what God will not act on and names the Spirit as the one testifying to it, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your amen who makes that word real in a woman at her own kitchen table.

And the second, which is the one that lets you get up and put the kettle on.

You have nothing further to do, and having nothing further to do is not you missing a step. The written undertaking is complete in itself and attaches no condition of feeling anywhere in it, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting for your chest to sign underneath, so the nothing can be in the room without meaning anything.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these because of where you stand, not because of what the last hour felt like. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that, and nothing about this morning, is what gives a person the right to speak over their own life. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a flat voice carries them as well as a full one. And what God does about the feeling is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Amen that landed on nothing, you are one word and you are not the receipt. Hebrews 10:17 says God remembers it no more, and remember there means act on, and He gave that as an undertaking rather than a feeling. In the name of Jesus you go back to being the end of a prayer, and I am getting up.
  2. Suspicion that it did not take, you have no right to stay in this kitchen. His word attaches no sensation to itself anywhere in the promise, and the Holy Spirit is named two verses above it as the one witnessing to me, and He was doing that while I sat here feeling nothing.
  3. Lord, You said You would not act on it, and Hebrews 10:17 puts that in the plainest covenant language there is. I am taking You at Your word at this table this morning, and I am going to make the tea forgiven.
