There were eleven pages and he signed four of them and initialed the rest, and the woman across the desk turned each one for him and said thank you every time in exactly the same tone.
It took nine minutes.
Rafael has been carrying this since he was twenty six. Not the money, though there was money. The thing underneath it, the thing he did, which he has told God about and which he has never told the two people who would most have the right to know.
He worked it out. That took a long time. Some of the working out was legal and slow and expensive and some of it was not legal at all, it was just a man making things right in the ways that were left to him.
And this morning, at nine forty in an office with a window facing a parking structure, it finished.
He came out. He sat in his truck. He put his hands on the wheel and he waited for something.
That was three hours ago and he has been driving since, out past the reservoir, back around, and he is exactly the man he was in the waiting room. Same weight. Same everything. The radio has been off for two hours because he cannot stand it.
If you have signed something, or done the last thing there was to do, and driven home unchanged, this is written for you. And I want to hand you one sentence about paperwork, because there is a word in it that names precisely what you signed.

The handwriting was in your own hand
Here is the sentence.
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.
The word behind handwriting is a specific one and it is not a general word for writing. It is the word for a certificate of debt written in the debtor's own hand. The ancient version of a signed IOU. The whole point of the instrument was that the handwriting made it undeniable, because a man cannot easily argue with his own pen.
So Paul does not say a charge was hanging over people. He says the document was in their handwriting.
And I want you to sit with that for a second, because it is the most exact description of your morning that anybody could have written two thousand years ago. Eleven pages. Four signatures. A woman turning each one and saying thank you.
You are the person that word was chosen for, and the document it names was in your own hand. Colossians 2:14 uses the term for a certificate of debt written by the debtor, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written cancellation and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it landed in a parking lot.
And here is the thing that a man driving out past a reservoir needs to hear. The instrument was canceled by somebody who was not the debtor. Paul does not say the debtor paid it off. He says it was blotted out and taken out of the way by another party entirely, and that is a completely different transaction from the one you spent fifteen years completing.
The one you completed this morning was real and it was right and it mattered. It was also not this one. This one was closed before you turned twenty six.
You have had a document canceled that you never had the capacity to cancel yourself. It is written as an act performed on the certificate by somebody other than the one who wrote it, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written cancellation into a life, which is why it holds three hours out on a road with the radio off.
Nailing it up was a public posting
Then the end of the sentence, and it is a picture that people miss because they read the cross into it too fast.
Nailing it to his cross.
Now, in that world, nailing a document up was not a way of destroying it. It was a way of publishing it. Notices went up on posts and doors and public boards so that everybody could see what had been decided, and a canceled bond posted publicly was the standard method of ending an argument about whether a debt was still live.
You did not nail up a thing to hide it. You nailed it up so that no one could ever claim it was still outstanding.
Which is a very particular kind of comfort for a man who has spent fifteen years in private with something. The cancellation is not a quiet arrangement between him and God that could be misremembered later. It has been posted. Publicly. Where the argument about it is over because everybody can see the document and everybody can see what was done to it.
You have a cancellation that was published rather than filed, and the arguing about it ended in public. Scripture uses the language of nailing up a bond, and the same Spirit at work in that letter is the one testifying to it inside a person now.
Something belongs here in the middle, in plain sight. If the driving has gone on and gotten heavier, if the nights have stretched out, or if the thinking has traveled past the flatness and out toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Call your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be in it with you. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in your faith. God has always worked through people, and one sitting across from you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.
Paperwork changes before people do
Now here is where I want to be honest with you rather than encouraging.
I am not going to tell you that tomorrow brings the sense of a man released. I have no idea. It might come next week in a hardware store for no reason at all. It might take years. It might be that the great gift of a life is an ordinary faithfulness with no drama in it, and that is extremely good company to be in.
What I will tell you is a fact about how documents work, and it is a plain one.
Paperwork always changes before people do. A deed transfers at the moment of signing and the house does not feel like yours for six months. A verdict is entered and the person it is entered for goes on flinching at the phone for a year. That is not a defect in either the document or the person. It is simply the ordinary lag between a fact and the person it is about.
Nothing in Colossians promises the lag will be short. It promises what happened to the certificate.
You are holding a fact whose truth was never scheduled to arrive in your chest on the same morning. Colossians 2:14 reports what was done to a document and says nothing at all about how anybody felt, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a truck on a road.
And to the man who has begun to suspect that all of it was somehow not enough: nothing about the flatness is evidence. It does not mean the working out was hollow or that something remains to be paid. There is nothing left to pay.
You are released, and the absence of a change in you is not a shortfall in you or in the release. The written cancellation attaches no feeling to itself anywhere, and it is His Spirit and not your ability to register Him who makes a closed thing genuinely closed.
Here is the pivot, and it is about which of two documents is the record.
Stop reading your own state as the record. Not because the flatness is wrong, and not because you ought to feel more than you do after a morning like that. Because the record is a certificate in your own handwriting with somebody else's cancellation across it, posted where everybody can see, and it does not update when you do.
You are clean, today, and the cancellation was posted long before the eleven pages. Colossians 2:14 names the instrument, blots it out, and nails it up in public, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a man three hours out on a road.
And the second, which is the one that gets a man to drive home.
You have nothing outstanding, and having nothing outstanding is not you having gotten off lightly. The written cancellation was performed by a party who was not the debtor and posted where no argument survives, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on your nervous system to catch up, so the sameness can be in the truck without being the report.
Go home. Put the radio back on if you want it.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these because of where you stand, not because of what the morning produced. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that, and nothing about today, is what gives a man the right to speak over his own life. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a flat voice carries them as well as a full one. And what God does about the feeling is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.
- Signature on the last page, you are ink and you are not a feeling. Colossians 2:14 says the handwriting was blotted out and nailed up, and that was done to my certificate by a hand that was not mine. In the name of Jesus you go back to being paperwork, and I am driving home.
- Suspicion that something is still outstanding, you have no right to ride in this truck. His word says the bond was taken out of the way and posted in public where nobody can argue it is live, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that in me on a day when I feel nothing at all.
- Lord, You blotted it out and You nailed it up, and Colossians 2:14 makes that a public posting and not a private arrangement. I am taking You at Your word out here on this road, and I am going home released.
