The front of it took the ribbon at the county show in September and it is on the wall in the hallway of a woman in the next town who paid what it was worth without being asked twice.
Ruby is seventy three and she has been quilting since she was nine, taught by a woman who was taught by a woman.
She would not want the back of that one judged.
Now, I want to be careful here because a quilter reading this will want the details and there are none coming, and it does not matter. It is not shoddy. Nobody sleeping under it will ever know and nobody handling it would say a word. It is that there is a section where her hands were not what they were, and she worked around it, and the working around is visible from the back to somebody who knows what to look for, and there are perhaps four people alive who would.
She thinks about it. Not constantly. When she is falling asleep, mostly.
And she knows exactly what it is a picture of, because she is not a woman who avoids things, and she named it to herself about a year ago in those words: the front is the front, and I would not want the back judged.
She is a churchgoing woman and it is not for show. She has prayed with women in that town through things that would break most people.
She just knows what the back of that quilt looks like.
If that is your quilt, this is written for you. And I want to give you one word out of Hebrews, because it is the name of an instrument and the instrument is built for something better than finding fault.

A discerner is a thing that tells apart
Here is the verse.
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Now, the sword gets all the attention and I understand why. It is a vivid image and it is a sharp one and it is usually preached with some edge on it.
I want the last word.
Discerner. And the Greek behind it is a word about distinguishing, about being able to tell two things apart that look alike. It is where we get the word critic, in the old sense of somebody who can distinguish, not in the modern sense of somebody who complains.
So the instrument named at the end of that verse is not primarily a thing that finds fault. It is a thing that can tell the difference.
And look at what it is said to distinguish: the thoughts and the intents. Two words, close together, both about what goes on inside a person, and the verse says this instrument can tell them apart.
You have an instrument able to tell two inward things apart rather than one built to find a fault. Hebrews 4:12 names a discerner and gives it two similar things to distinguish, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written instrument and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands in front of a quilt frame.
Now let me say why that matters at three in the morning.
A woman falling asleep thinking about the back of a quilt is not able to tell those two things apart. She has one lump, and in the lump is a section where her hands failed her, and a decision she made to work around it, and a ribbon she took at a show, and the whole thing is fused together and it reads as one thing, and the one thing it reads as is a woman who let something pass.
The instrument in that verse separates them. And once they are separated, one of those items is a body that is seventy three years old, and one of them is a craftswoman making a judgment call about how to finish a piece, and neither of those is what the lump was accusing her of.
You have a lump that this instrument was built to take apart. It is written as a discerner rather than an accuser, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written distinguishing into a life, which is why it holds in the dark at three in the morning.
Sharper is not the same as harsher
There is a phrase before it and I want to handle it honestly rather than skip it.
Sharper than any twoedged sword.
That does read severe. But think about what sharpness is for in an instrument that divides. A blunt tool separating two things that are joined does damage to both of them. It tears. It takes some of one into the other.
Sharpness is what makes an accurate separation possible. A surgeon does not want a blunt instrument, and neither does anybody being operated on, and the sharpness is entirely on the patient's side.
So sharper than any sword, in a verse about telling apart thoughts and intents, is not a promise of severity. It is a promise of precision, and precision is what a person needs when the thing they are carrying is fused.
You are being separated precisely rather than cut about, and the sharpness is the mercy in it. Scripture puts the sharpness in the service of dividing rather than of wounding, and the same Spirit at work in that letter is the one testifying inside a person now.
Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the falling asleep has been getting harder, if the one section has spread into a general account of yourself, if the nights have been getting long or the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Ring your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If tonight is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in anybody's faith. God has always worked through people.
The front is not a lie
Now the thing I most want said, and I want it plain.
The front of that quilt is not a lie.
Somebody in the next town has it on a wall. She looks at it. She paid what it was worth and did not have to be asked twice, and every day that thing gives her something, and none of what it gives her is false.
A quilt front is not a sworn statement about every stitch on the reverse. Nobody has ever understood it as one. Quilters know better than anybody that a back is a back, and that hands change, and that a woman of seventy three who is still taking ribbons is not somebody anybody would want to hear apologizing.
There is a real thing on the reverse of that piece. I am not pretending otherwise and I am not telling you it does not matter to you, because plainly it does.
But it is a section, and the front is a front, and a woman who has started reading her own good work as a deception has lost something she was entitled to keep for sixty four years.
You made something genuinely good, and the front of it was never a claim about the back. Hebrews 4:12 gives an instrument that separates things rather than one that convicts anybody, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.
And I am not going to tell you that the thinking stops at night, or that the section stops mattering to you. That is not mine to promise.
You are clean right now with the back exactly as it is, and the back has never once been the thing being examined. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
Here is the hinge of it, and it turns on the last word of the verse.
The lump has been carried as one thing. The instrument in that verse exists to take apart two inward things that look alike, and once they are apart, most of what has been keeping a woman awake turns out to be filed under the wrong heading.
You are being separated accurately, this afternoon, rather than examined for fault. Hebrews 4:12 names a discerner and puts the sharpness in the service of dividing, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a woman at her own quilt frame.
And the second, which is the one that lets a person sleep.
You have nothing to confess about a section, and having nothing to confess is not you excusing yourself. The written instrument distinguishes rather than convicts and was given to be used on exactly this kind of fused thing, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on a better piece of work, so the back can be what it is while the front goes on being good.
Declare this over yourself
Say this because of where you stand, not because of what is on the reverse. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a person the right to speak over their own work. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a tired voice carries them as well as a strong one. And what God does about the section is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.
- Backing nobody turns over, you are honest work and you are not a fraud. Hebrews 4:12 names a discerner of thoughts and intents, which is an instrument for telling two things apart and not for convicting anybody. In the name of Jesus you go back to being the reverse of a quilt.
- Lump I have been carrying as one thing, you have no right to keep me awake in this house. His word puts the sharpness in the service of an accurate dividing rather than of any wounding, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that in me this afternoon.
- Lord, Your word is a discerner of the thoughts and the intents, and Hebrews 4:12 gives it two like things to separate. I am taking You at Your word at this frame, and I am letting You do the dividing.
