Pure HeartPsalm 26:2

The Dish They Always Ask Her to Bring

This message is for the woman known across the whole church for one dish she brings to every supper, who knows exactly what her own week looked like, and needs the inside dealt with rather than the outside maintained

Somebody rings her about it. Every time. There is a woman on the hospitality team who has her number specifically for this and has used it for nine years.

It is a good dish. It is genuinely a good dish and she is not being modest, and she got it from her mother and improved it, which her mother has acknowledged in front of people, which was a big thing.

Marcelle is fifty six.

She has begun to notice something about it and it started at a funeral in March, when a woman she did not know well said to her, warmly, meaning nothing but kindness: oh, you are the one who brings the such and such.

You are the one who brings it.

She smiled and said yes and it was fine and the woman moved on and it was a perfectly nice exchange.

And she has not been able to put it down since, because there is a whole life underneath that sentence that nobody in that hall has any access to, and it has not been a straightforward nine years, and there is a stretch of it she has never described to anybody, and the sum total of what four hundred people know about her is one recipe.

She is not blaming them. She wants that clear. Nobody has failed her and she is not owed anything.

She just knows that the thing they ask her for is about a tenth of what she is carrying.

If you are known for one thing, this is written for you. And I want to give you a verse where somebody asks to be examined in three separate ways at once, and I want to ask why anybody would do that.

The Dish They Always Ask Her to Bring

Three verbs in one line

Here is the verse.

Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart.

Three verbs. Examine, prove, try. And they are not synonyms padding a line out. They are three different procedures, and in the language they come from each one has its own weight: one is a scrutiny, one is a testing under conditions, one is the assay of metal.

He asks for all three.

Now, that is an unusual request and I want to sit with why. Nobody asks for three separate examinations when one would settle it, unless the thing they want is not a verdict but a full picture.

A man wanting to be found innocent asks for the narrowest possible test on the strongest available ground. A man asking for three at once is not managing a verdict at all. He is asking to be seen in full.

You are looking at somebody asking to be seen in full rather than tested on the strongest ground. Psalm 26:2 stacks three distinct procedures in one request, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written asking and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands in a fellowship hall.

And that is exactly the ache underneath being known for one thing.

It is not that she wants a verdict. It is that four hundred people have one item of information about her and the item is a recipe, and there is no unkindness in that and nothing anybody did wrong, and it still leaves a woman standing in a hall being known by about a tenth.

You have somewhere to be known in full, and the asking for it is written down as a thing a person is allowed to want. It is written as a request for three examinations at once, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written asking into a life, which is why it holds standing at a serving table.

The reins and the heart

Look at what he offers up in the second half.

Try my reins and my heart.

The reins meant the kidneys, and in that world they stood for the deepest inaccessible part of a person, the place nobody reaches. The heart stood for the will and the thinking. Together they are a way of saying: the part I do not have words for, and the part I do.

He offers both. Not the presentable one. Both, in one line, without sorting them first.

That is worth noticing for a woman who has been handing over one dish for nine years. She has not been hiding. Nobody has ever asked her for the rest, and there has been no natural place to put it, and a fellowship hall on a Sunday is genuinely not the venue.

But there is a place where the whole of it goes at once, unsorted, and this psalm is a man doing exactly that.

You have somewhere the unsorted whole goes at once. Scripture names the reachable and the unreachable parts together in one offering, and the same Spirit at work in that psalm is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If being known by a tenth has been getting heavier, if the stretch you have never described has been sitting closer than it used to, if the nights have been getting long or the thinking has traveled out past the ache toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in anybody's faith. God has always worked through people, and one sitting across from you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

The dish is not a mask

Now the thing I most want said, because I suspect it has been quietly turning sour since March.

The dish is not a mask.

She makes it and brings it and people eat it and something real passes between her and four hundred people every time, and it has been happening for nine years. That is not concealment. That is a woman feeding her church, repeatedly, at her own expense and in her own time, with something she is genuinely good at.

Being known for a real thing is not the same as being hidden behind it. Those two feel identical from the inside and they are completely different, and the difference is whether anything false is being presented.

Nothing false is being presented. The dish is real, the skill is real, the going is real, and none of it has ever claimed to be a complete account of a life. No dish has ever claimed that.

You have been giving something real, and being known for it was never a concealment. Psalm 26:2 has a man asking to be seen in full without one word against what anybody already knows of him, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you somebody in that hall asks you something bigger this year. That is not mine to promise and it may not happen, and if it does not happen that is not a failure of that church or of you.

You are clean right now known for one recipe, and the recipe has never once been a witness against you. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.

The breakthrough

This is the turn, and it turns on what the man in the psalm is asking for.

He is not managing a verdict. He asks for three procedures at once, which nobody does who is trying to be found innocent narrowly, and he offers the part he has words for and the part he does not, together, unsorted.

That is not a defense. That is a request to be known.

You are known in full by somebody who took all three, this afternoon. Psalm 26:2 stacks the examinations and takes the whole offering, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a woman at a serving table.

And the second, which is the one that lets a person carry the dish in gladly.

You have nothing to make up for and only something to hand over whole, and handing over whole is the one thing a hall was never going to be able to receive. The written request asks for a complete seeing and never criticizes anybody's partial reputation, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on somebody to ask you a bigger question, so the recipe can stay exactly what it is.

Declare this over yourself

Say this because of where you stand, not because of what anybody knows about you. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a person the right to speak over their own life. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a tired voice carries them as well as a strong one. And what God does about the rest of it is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Dish they always ask for, you are a good recipe and you are not the whole of me. Psalm 26:2 has a man asking for three examinations at once, which is what somebody does who wants to be seen and not somebody managing a verdict. In the name of Jesus you go back to being a gift, and I am glad to bring you.
  2. Ache of being known by a tenth, you have no right to stand in this hall. His word offers the reachable part and the part with no words together in one line, unsorted, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that in me this afternoon.
  3. Lord, examine me and prove me and try my reins and my heart, and Psalm 26:2 puts all three of those in one breath. I am taking You at Your word at this table, and I am handing over the whole of it.
