The Set List and the Drive Home

The set was right. She knew it was right on Thursday and she knew it again at the top of the second song when the room caught up and the whole thing lifted, and there was a moment about two thirds through where she stopped singing for four bars because the congregation had it and did not need her.

That is the best thing that happens in her job. It is genuinely the best thing.

Callie is thirty three. She drove home at half past twelve with the window down.

And somewhere on the highway, in the way it always does, the rest of the week arrived. Not a specific accusation. More an accurate awareness of what her actual seven days had been, the tone of one particular conversation, a thing she did not do that she said she would, the way she has been about somebody, and the whole of it sat in the car with her exactly as it does every Sunday.

She is not a hypocrite. I want to put that down before anything else and I will put it down again later. What happened in that room happened. Nobody was defrauded and God was not absent and she was not performing.

She just knows what is underneath the week she led out of.

If that is your drive home, this is written for you. And I want to give you one Greek word, because it does not mean what everybody thinks it means and what it actually means is a great deal kinder.

Pure means unmixed

Here is the line.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Now, pure in English has drifted almost entirely toward the moral sense. Pure means spotless. Unblemished. Without sin. And so a woman on a highway with an accurate memory of her week hears that verse and knows she is not in it.

The word is katharos, and its home meaning is unmixed.

It is what you say about a metal with no alloy in it. About wine that has not been cut with anything. About wheat with nothing else threshed into it. The picture is not moral spotlessness. The picture is one substance rather than two.

So pure in heart, in the ordinary sense of the word, means single hearted. Not divided. One thing rather than a mixture of things.

And I know how that could still land badly, so let me keep going, because the direction of the word matters more than the definition.

You are being described by a word about singleness rather than a word about spotlessness. Matthew 5:8 uses the term for unmixed rather than the term for morally faultless, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written definition and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands on a highway.

Two things or one

Here is the part that changes a drive home.

If pure means spotless, then a woman with a week like that is disqualified, and the only question is how disqualified, and the drive home is an audit.

If pure means unmixed, the question is different. It is: what is this made of.

And what happened in that room was not a performance laid over a hollow center. She meant it. That is the actual fact of the matter and she would say so if you asked her directly, and the reason the drive home hurts is precisely that she meant it. A performer does not have this problem. A performer drives home fine.

The ache comes from being one thing that is not finished, not from being two things.

You are one substance in the middle of being worked rather than two substances laid over each other. Scripture uses the unmixed word and not the flawless word, and the same Spirit at work in that sermon is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the drive home has started arriving before the drive home, if the awareness has gotten heavier than the week deserves, if the nights have been getting long or the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in your faith. God has always worked through people, and one across a table from you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

Nobody in that room was defrauded

Now I want to say the thing I most want said, and I want to be exact, because this is where an article like this usually goes wrong by being encouraging in a way that does not survive a second reading.

Nobody in that room was defrauded.

Here is why, and it is not a technicality. What a worship leader does is not testify about her own week. She does not stand up and say: my seven days have been exemplary, follow me. She stands up and says true things about God, and the room says them with her, and the truth of those things does not depend on her at any point in the transaction.

If it did, then the value of a service would rise and fall with the private life of whoever was holding the microphone, and no room anywhere has ever been run that way, and God has never once made a promise conditional on it.

So the four bars where she stopped and the room had it were real. The lift was real. And the drive home is not evidence against any of it.

You have been carrying true things rather than testifying about yourself, and the truth of them never rested on you. Matthew 5:8 describes a kind of heart and not a qualification for speaking, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you the drive home gets easier, or that a Sunday comes when the week does not arrive on the highway. That is not mine to promise and I would rather you trusted me later.

You are clean right now with the whole week in the car, and the week has never once been a witness about what happened in that room. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
