It is the second drawer of the chest on the landing and he has said the word stuck about it perhaps forty times.
It is not stuck. Karim is entirely aware that it is not stuck. He has said it to his wife, to his brother, to a man who came to look at the boiler and had no reason to be interested, and each time he said it easily and moved on and nobody has ever thought twice.
He is fifty. That drawer has been shut since a particular spring.
Here is the thing that has been on his mind lately, and it started about a year ago and has not gone away. It is not the drawer. The drawer is a piece of furniture and he could open it in three seconds and put the whole business behind him if the drawer were the point.
It is that he says stuck.
He has told a small untruth about a piece of furniture, easily and often, for years, to people he loves, and he has done it so smoothly that it has never once caught in his throat, and about a year ago he heard himself say it to his own son and thought: what am I.
He is a believing man and it is not decorative. He prays properly. He would tell you God has all of him.
Except a drawer on the landing that is not stuck.
If there is a shut place in your house or in your life, this is written for you. And before anything else I want to say plainly: nothing in this article will ever ask you to describe what is in it, to anybody, at any point. Not to a person, not to a group, not to me. This is between you and God and it stays there.

The psalm has the wish in it
Here is the line.
If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
Now I want you to notice something about the shape of that, because it is remarkable and almost nobody remarks on it.
The psalmist puts the wish to be hidden inside his own psalm.
He does not describe it as a temptation he overcame. He does not say some people think this. He says: if I say. He voices it in the first person, in the middle of the most exalted passage in the whole book about God's knowledge, and he gives it a full clause of its own.
And then, crucially, look at what happens next. There is no rebuke. Not one word. He does not correct himself, he does not apologize for the thought, and God is not recorded as being displeased by it. The psalm simply reports what the darkness turns out to be, which is light, and moves on.
So the wish to be covered is in Scripture, in the mouth of the man writing the psalm, and it is treated as a completely ordinary thing for a person to want.
You are holding a wish that is written into the psalm itself and never once rebuked in it. Psalm 139:11 voices the wanting to be hidden in the first person, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written honesty and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands on a landing.
I want to stay there another moment, because for a man who has just realized he tells a small untruth about a drawer, being met without rebuke is not a minor detail. It is the whole condition of anything else being possible.
You have been met without a word of correction, and that is the ground the rest of this stands on. It is written with the wish stated and no reproach anywhere near it, and His Spirit is the one carrying an unreproached welcome into a life, which is why it holds on a landing in front of a shut drawer.
The night shall be light
Then the answer, and the answer is not what a person braces for.
Even the night shall be light about me.
Brace for a searchlight. That is what most people expect, because that is what exposure means in every human context: a beam, directed, that finds a thing and shows it to somebody.
This is not a searchlight. Read the wording. The night itself becomes light, all around him. It is not that a beam is aimed at the dark corner. It is that there stops being a dark corner, because the medium the man is standing in has changed.
That is an entirely different experience from being found out. Nobody is picked out. Nothing is singled. The whole room simply turns out to be lit and always to have been lit, and the man standing in it was never in fact standing in the dark.
You are standing in a lit room rather than under a beam, and the difference between those is everything. Scripture says the night itself becomes light about the person rather than a light being turned on them, and the same Spirit at work in that psalm is the one testifying inside a person now.
Something belongs here in the middle where it cannot be skipped. If the shut drawer has gotten heavier over the years, if the nights have been getting long, or if the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Call your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. And you do not have to say a word about the drawer to do that: a good one will never require it, and a person can go for years without ever opening it and still be well helped. If tonight is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. None of that is a failure of faith. God has always worked through people.
The saying of the word
Now I want to speak to the thing that has actually been bothering you for a year, because it is not the drawer.
It is the sentence.
And here is what I want to say about it, and I want to be exact. A person who has built a small, smooth, repeatable sentence to protect a shut place has not become a liar. They have built a door handle. That is what it is for and that is all it does, and it comes out easily because it has been worn smooth by use and not because anything in them has hardened.
I am not going to tell you to stop saying it, either. There is no requirement anywhere that a man announce the contents of his own house to a boiler engineer, and telling somebody a drawer is stuck rather than explaining a spring twenty years ago is not a moral failure, it is ordinary human privacy, and privacy is not the same thing as hiding from God.
The thing that got heavy is not the sentence. It is that the sentence became load bearing, and a man does not want to live in a house held up by one small worn phrase.
You have been holding a door rather than telling a lie, and the distinction matters more than anybody has told you. Psalm 139:11 puts the wish to be covered in the text without reproach, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.
And I am not going to tell you the drawer opens tonight. It may not open for years. That is not you refusing God and there is no window closing.
You are clean right now with the drawer exactly as shut as it is, and the drawer has never once been a witness about you. It is written and it is lit, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a lit thing settled in a body.
This is the turn, and it turns on what kind of light it is.
The dread is of exposure, which means a beam and a face and a moment. There is no beam here. The whole room is lit and has always been lit, and the man standing on the landing was never actually in the dark, whatever the drawer has been doing.
You are in the light already, this evening, and the night around you was never dark to Him. Psalm 139:11 says even the night shall be light about me, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a man standing in his own hallway.
And the second, which is the one that lets a person put a hand on the handle or not, freely.
You have nothing to reveal and only something to permit, and permitting is a far smaller thing than the one you have been bracing for. The written psalm voices the wish to be hidden and answers it with light rather than with rebuke, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on a drawer, so the second one down can stay shut without shutting anybody out.
Declare this over yourself
Say this because of where you stand, not because of what is open. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a man the right to speak over his own house. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a quiet voice carries them as well as a strong one. And what God does about the drawer is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.
- Drawer I say is stuck, you are a drawer and you are not a wall. Psalm 139:11 puts the wish to be covered right into the psalm and answers it with light and not one word of rebuke. In the name of Jesus you stop standing between us, and you may stay shut as long as you like.
- Dread of a beam and a face, you have no right to stand on this landing. His word turns the night itself into light all around rather than aiming anything at anybody, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that in me this evening.
- Lord, You make the night light about me, and Psalm 139:11 says the room changes rather than the corner being found. I am taking You at Your word out here on the landing, and I am saying You may be in there with me.
