The Prayer She Only Prays in Her Head

When she prays over that church the room goes with her. That is not vanity and everybody in the building would say the same thing. She has been doing it for twenty six years and there are people who came to faith standing in a room while she was praying and they will tell you so.

She is not performing. She would find the suggestion funny.

Corinne is fifty three.

There is one thing she has never prayed out loud.

Not once, in twenty six years, and not because she has decided not to. She has tried, alone, more than once, in her own car with the engine off, and what happens is not that she stops herself. What happens is that it does not assemble. She gets as far as the shape of it, the beginning of the shape of it, and there are no words on the other side of that, and after a while she starts the car.

So it lives in her head, half formed, and it has lived there for a very long time.

She has never told anybody that any of this exists, and she does not intend to, and nobody is going to make her.

If you have a thing that will not assemble into words, this is written for you. And before we go anywhere: nothing here will ask you to find the words, or to say them to any person, ever. Not to a friend, not to a group, not to me. This is between you and God and it stays that way.

The unutterable is assigned to Him

Here is the verse.

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Now, I want to take that slowly because it is doing something extraordinarily specific.

First: we know not what we should pray for as we ought. That is not describing a spiritual failure. Paul puts it as a flat statement about the ordinary condition of praying people, himself included. There is a category of thing that a believer genuinely cannot get into words, and Scripture says so plainly and does not treat it as a problem with the believer.

Second, and this is the part: the Spirit Himself makes intercession, with groanings which cannot be uttered.

The unutterable is not a gap in the system. It is assigned. There is somebody whose particular work is precisely the thing that has no words, and He does it from inside the person, and the verse describes the sound of it as groaning rather than as speech, which means the wordlessness is not a defect in the transmission, it is the form.

You have a wordless thing that is somebody else's assigned work rather than your unfinished business. Romans 8:26 puts the unutterable in the Spirit's hands as His own particular office, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written assignment and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands in a parked car.

And I want to say what that does to twenty six years of trying and failing in a car.

It was not failing. There is nothing in that verse to fail at. A thing that does not assemble was never supposed to assemble on your side, and the attempts in the car were a woman doing somebody else's job with the wrong equipment, out of conscientiousness, for a very long time.

You have been attempting a work that was never assigned to you, and the not managing it was never a shortfall. It is written as the Spirit's office and not as anybody's obligation, and His Spirit is the one carrying an assigned work into a life, which is why it holds in a car where nothing has been said.

Helpeth is a carrying word

There is a word at the front of that verse worth stopping on.

The Spirit helpeth our infirmities.

The word behind helpeth is a compound and its picture is very physical. It means to take hold of something along with somebody, from the other side. It is the word for two people lifting a thing together, where the second person gets underneath the far end.

It is not a word for encouragement. It is not standing beside somebody saying you can do it. It is the other end of the weight being picked up by hands that are not yours, at the same time, so that the load is genuinely shared and not merely witnessed.

That matters here, because a woman who prays powerfully for other people has spent her life at the near end of a great many weights. She knows exactly what it is to get underneath something for somebody else. And what this verse says is that on this one, on the thing that does not assemble, somebody has got underneath the far end of it with her.

You have somebody at the far end of it who took hold at the same time you did. Scripture uses the word for lifting together from the other side, and the same Spirit at work in that verse is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the half formed thing has gotten heavier over the years, if the nights have been getting long, or if the thinking has traveled out past the ache and toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. And you do not have to get any of it into words to do that: a good one will never require it, and a woman can be well helped for years without ever assembling a sentence about it. If tonight is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. None of that is a failure of faith. God has always worked through people.

It has been prayed the whole time

Now I want to say the thing I would most want said to me, and I want to be exact about it.

That prayer has been going up for twenty six years.

Not by her. That is the whole point of the verse. The intercession described there is continuous and it is the Spirit's own, and it is specifically about the material a person cannot get into words, which means the very thing she has believed was stuck in her head has in fact been in front of God the entire time, continuously, in a form she never had to produce.

The silence in the car was never silence.

You have had it prayed continuously in a form nobody required you to produce. Romans 8:26 describes the interceding as ongoing and as the Spirit's own action, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you that it assembles this year, or that words arrive, or that you ever say a syllable of it out loud to anybody, God included. It may stay exactly as it is for the rest of your life and nothing about that would be a failure or a loss.

You are clean right now with it still half formed, and the half formedness has never once been a witness about you. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
