He polished the shoes last night, the way he does every Saturday, and now they are on the door of the church, and so is he, and so is the handshake, and so is everything else that looks right.
The foyer is filling. He knows most of the names and uses them. Coats come off, children duck past his knees, somebody hands him a coffee he did not ask for and he thanks them and puts it on the sill. His wife is in the third row already with the girls, and the girls are in the dresses their grandmother sent, and if you were arriving for the first time this morning you would think, that is a good family, and that man on the door is a rock. People have said so. People say so to his face, and he takes it, because what is he going to say.
He knows exactly what is under it. He is not going to tell you and I am not going to ask; it is his and God's. But it is there, and it has been there for a long time, and every Sunday it stands on the door with him in polished shoes and nobody sees it, and the not seeing has become its own weight. He has got very good at the outside. He can keep the outside up in his sleep. What he cannot do is reach the thing underneath, and he is tired in a way that a good handshake does not fix.
The service starts. He takes his seat beside his wife. The song comes up on the screen and he sings it, and his voice sounds fine, and inside he is standing on a floor with something under it, and everyone around him is standing on the same floor and thinks it is solid because he does.
You are the one on the door. Everything about your life looks right and you know precisely what is underneath, and this morning I am speaking to you, the one whose underneath is your own. If what you carry beneath the surface was put there by somebody else's hands and not by yours, this is not the message written to you; there is one on this site that is, and it does not accuse you of anything, and you should go and read it. But if the thing under the floor is yours, stay. I am not going to call you a hypocrite. You have already tried that word on yourself and it did not clean anything.

The gap is real, and it is not what you think it means
Let me name what it is like before I say anything about God, because the man on the door has been told plenty about God and none of it has reached the floor. There is an outside, and it works. There is an inside, and it does not match. And the gap between the two is not comfortable; it is exhausting, because it takes everything you have to keep the outside standing over the inside, week after week, and the better you get at it the lonelier it becomes, because now nobody can help you with a thing they cannot see. That is the pit. It is not pride. It is a person who does not know how to get to their own inside and has settled for maintaining the surface because the surface is the part they can reach.
Now hear this over you, in the third row, and hear who is saying it. You are seen where you live, and the One who sees is not looking at the shoes. I do not speak my own thought; it is written that man looks on the outward appearance and the Lord looks on the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that gaze a mercy rather than a threat.
For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.1 Samuel 16:7
That sentence was said in a house full of tall, right looking sons, and God passed every one of them and sent for the boy nobody had bothered to bring in from the field. Understand what that means for the man on the door. God has never once been fooled by an outside. Not yours, not anyone's. He was not fooled last Sunday and He was not fooled when they called you a rock. And here is the mercy inside that: He was not looking at the outside when He chose you either. You have been known underneath from the beginning, and Scripture says He desires truth in the inward being, which means the inside is where He has always wanted to meet you, and His Spirit is already there.
The world tells you to fix the outside and the inside will follow. God works the other way round. I know something of this from ground. A slope can look green from the road and be dying at the root, and no amount of work on the surface will save it; and a slope can look black and bare after fire and be alive underneath where the seed is, and the green comes up because the root is being tended. He tends the root. He starts where nobody can see, and He starts there on purpose, because that is where you actually are.
He started underneath
Here is the lie that stands on the door with you, and I want to name it so it can be put out. It says that if the inside were ever seen the whole thing would come down; the family, the seat, the name, the handshake, all of it. It says the outside is holding the inside in and if you stop holding, it will spill. So keep polishing.
Hear me. God has already seen it. All of it. Nothing came down. You are standing in front of a God who has looked straight at the thing under the floor and has not walked away, and Scripture says He cleans the heart itself, sprinkled clean from an evil conscience, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing that work in the one place your polishing never reached. He is not waiting for you to reach it. He can. He did not come to a man to fix his shoes.
I want to say plainly what I am not saying. I am not saying tell someone. I am not asking you to describe anything to me or to anyone. What is under the floor is between you and God, and God already knows it in full, so there is nothing to disclose to Him and nothing to stage. I am not saying the outside is bad; the shoes are fine, the handshake is a real gift to the people coming through the door. I am saying the outside was never the part He was cleaning, and you have been putting the whole of your strength into the part He was not looking at. You have a God who started underneath, and He started there because it is written that He looks there, and His Spirit is patient enough to finish what He started.
And one line that is not about Sundays. If keeping the outside up has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have begun to think the family would be better without the man behind the handshake, then tell one human being today, and if you are in danger reach the crisis line where you live and let a real voice sit with you. God looking on the heart does not mean nobody else may; it means He sends people, and He is not offended when you call.
Do not straighten anything. Something is meant to happen here that is not the outside getting better.
The Lord who passed seven tall sons and sent for the boy in the field is looking at you now, and He is not looking at the shoes. He is looking at the heart, and He has been there since before you learned to keep the surface up, and He is cleaning it. You are being made clean underneath, where nobody sees, and it is His word and not your polish that says so, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing it while you sit in the third row with your voice sounding fine. The outside can follow, the way green follows a tended root, in His time, and it does not need you to hold the floor up while He works.
Put the weight down. He has seen what is under the floor and He is not walking away. He started there.
You have an inside that God began on first, and the verdict you have been passing on the surface has no right to stay. The written word has Him passing over seven tall sons to send out to the field for the youngest (1 Samuel 16:7, 1 Samuel 16:11), and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the actual cleaning underneath while a man stands in the third row with his voice sounding fine.
Declare this over yourself
Now say it, in the parking lot or on the doorstep, out loud. You are seated with Christ, and the standing to say these lines came with that seat and not with the shoes. Scripture is the floor under every word and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying them, so a voice that has been keeping up appearances for years is enough voice. The mountain here is not the thing under the floor. It is the fear that being seen underneath would end you. Jesus said that whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt in his heart has what he says, so speak to that fear, and then leave the outcome to Him; the pace of the inside work belongs to Him.
- Life that looks right from the outside, you are not the whole of me and you were never the part God was looking at. It is written that man looks on the outward appearance and the Lord looks on the heart, and He started there, underneath, where I live.
- Fear that the inside seen would end me, get out in the name of Jesus. Scripture says He desires truth in the inward being, and the Holy Spirit is already inside the place I keep locked, cleaning it, not exposing me.
- Lord, You are cleaning what nobody can see and You began there. Today one thing I keep up for appearance stays undone, and I thank You, because Your word says You look on the heart, and You have never once been fooled by my outside and never once turned away from my inside.
