The Loudest Amen in the Building

You can pick her out. Everybody can. There is a point about eighteen minutes into most sermons where the pastor turns a corner and lands something, and there is a half second of room, and then there is Sister Renae, and it is not close.

It is not showing off. Anybody who has been in that church longer than a month knows the difference, and she has been there thirty one years, and the amen is real and it lands where it should and more than one preacher has said afterward that they leaned on it.

She is sixty two.

She knows what her week was.

Not a disaster. She wants that understood and I do too. Nobody is in danger and nothing is hidden that would shock anybody. It is that there has been a hardness in her for a while now, toward one person in particular and lately toward more than one, and she has watched it spread the way a thing spreads, and she says amen on a Sunday out of a chest that has been like that all week.

She has never said any of this out loud. She has certainly never said it to the pastor, who thinks of her, correctly, as one of the great steadying presences of that congregation.

If that is your Sunday, this is written for you. And I want to hand you a promise about surgery, and I want you to notice whose hands are in it and what the whole thing is for.

Whose hands

Here is the promise.

And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.

Now, the first thing is the hands, and there is no ambiguity in the sentence.

The LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart.

That is surgery, and the surgeon is named, and it is not the patient. Nobody has ever performed that operation on themselves in the history of the world and Moses does not suggest anybody try.

This matters here because there is an instruction elsewhere in that same book that sounds similar. Earlier God tells the people to circumcise their own hearts. And a serious person who knows both passages has usually landed on the first one and been trying to do it since, and has understood every failure to change as a failure to obey.

The later promise does not cancel the earlier command and I am not going to pretend it does. What it does is tell you who actually performs the operation. The command names a direction. The promise names a surgeon, and the surgeon is God.

You have a surgeon named in the sentence and it was never you. Deuteronomy 30:6 puts the operating in God's hands explicitly, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written promise and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands in a church hall.

And there is something else in it, which is the tense.

Will circumcise. It is a promise about what He is going to do rather than a report on whether anybody has qualified. It is not conditional on a good week. A woman with a hardness that has been spreading has not disqualified herself from a thing that was promised in the future tense to people who were not doing well.

You have a promise stated in the future tense with no qualification in front of it. It is written as an undertaking and not as a reward, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written undertaking into a life, which is why it holds sitting in a third row with a week behind you.

What the surgery is for

Now the purpose clause, and this is the part that changes what a person is aiming at.

To love the LORD thy God with all thine heart.

That is what the operation is for. Not compliance. Not tidiness. Not the removal of the hardness as an end in itself. The stated purpose is capacity to love.

Sit with that for a moment, because a program of trying to be less hard toward somebody has a different aim entirely. The aim of that program, honestly stated, is usually the removal of a bad thing. Stop being like this. Get this out.

The promise aims at something else entirely. It aims at a capacity being enlarged, and the hardness goes because it is in the way of that, not because it is the target.

That is a different project with a different feel and a different set of instructions, and the instructions in this case amount to: receive it, because the surgeon is not you.

You are aimed at a capacity rather than at the removal of a fault. Scripture states the purpose as loving rather than as ceasing, and the same Spirit at work in that promise is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the hardness has spread further than one person, if it has begun landing on people in your own house, if the nights have been getting long or the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in anybody's faith. God has always worked through people, and one sitting across from you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

The amen is not a cover

Now the thing I most want to say, and I want to say it plainly because I suspect it has been getting heavier every Sunday for a while.

The amen is not a cover.

More than one preacher has said they leaned on it. That is not a small thing and it is not a courtesy. A room that has somebody in it who answers at the right moment is a different room, and everybody who has ever stood up front knows it, and thirty one years of that is a ministry whether anybody has ever called it one.

And here is the part that matters: the amen is not a claim about her week. It is agreement with what was said from the front. When she says it, she is not testifying that her chest is in good order. She is saying: that is true, what he just said is true.

And it was true. Every time. The truth of it never depended on her.

So a woman saying amen out of a hard week is not a woman lying in church. She is a woman agreeing with something true while carrying something difficult, and those two have coexisted in every congregation that has ever met.

You have been agreeing with something true rather than testifying about yourself. Deuteronomy 30:6 promises the operation to people in the middle of a long failure and never withdraws it from them, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you the hardness lifts by Easter or on any schedule at all. That is not mine to promise and I would rather be useful to you than encouraging for an afternoon.

You are clean right now with the week exactly as it was, and the week has never once been what the amen was claiming. It is written and it is promised, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a promised thing real in a body.
