Once For AllHebrews 10:12

The Same Prayer, the Ninth Time

This message is for the woman who has brought one thing to God so many times she stopped counting, and brought it again this morning before the coffee finished, who needs to stop re-confessing something already dealt with

The coffee maker takes four minutes and twenty seconds and she knows that because she has counted it, standing right here, on a great many mornings.

She got most of the way through it again today.

Not all of it. She started, and she got to the part where she names it, and then she said the rest of it in a shorthand that has developed over about six years, which is a sentence and a half and then a kind of trailing off, because at some point in there she always hears herself.

Prue is thirty seven. She has brought this to God so many times that she genuinely could not give you a number, and the number stopped being interesting some time ago because it stopped being a number and became a fact about her mornings, like the coffee maker.

She is not doing it out of terror. She would want that said. She is not lying awake. It is more that the thing is there when she wakes up, in the way a chore is there, and dealing with it is what she does before the day starts, and if she skips it there is a small unease all morning that she would find difficult to describe.

She believes it was forgiven the first time. She would say that plainly.

And she says it again on a Tuesday while the coffee runs.

If that is your kitchen, this is written for you. And I want to point at a piece of furniture that is not in the Bible, because what is missing from a room can tell you more than what is in it.

The Same Prayer, the Ninth Time

There were no chairs

The tabernacle is described in enormous detail. Dimensions, materials, colors, the exact construction of every object, the rings and the poles and the coverings, page after page of it, because God wanted it made a particular way and said so.

There is no chair.

Not one, anywhere in the whole specification. There is a table and there is a lampstand and there is an altar and an ark, and there is nowhere for anybody to sit down, and the priests worked in there day after day, year after year, standing, for the whole of their lives.

That is not an oversight. It is a statement in the furniture. The work was never finished, so there was nothing to sit on.

Now here is the verse.

But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.

He sat down.

To anybody who knew that room, that is not a detail about posture. It is an announcement. It is the one thing no priest had ever been able to do, done by somebody who had finished, and the writer of Hebrews puts it in exactly because his readers would have felt the shock of it.

You are on the other side of a sitting down, and there is no work left standing in that room. Hebrews 10:12 reports one sacrifice and then a seat, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written posture and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands over a coffee maker.

And I want to say something carefully, because a woman who prays about a thing every morning could hear all that as a rebuke, and it is not one.

Nothing here forbids you to pray about it. God is not tired of you and He is not tapping His foot and He does not sigh when you start. Bring Him anything, as often as you like, forever. He is not a man with a limited patience.

What the verse removes is not the freedom. It is the obligation. There is a difference between may and must, and this whole passage is about the second one.

You have been released from a requirement rather than told off for a habit, and those two things are not related. It is written as an announcement about a finished work and not as a rebuke to anybody, and His Spirit is the one carrying a lifted requirement into a life, which is why it holds on a Tuesday morning when you did it again.

For ever is inside the sentence

Now look where the words sit, because the ordering is doing work.

One sacrifice for sins for ever.

The for ever is not attached to the sitting. It is attached to the offering. It is not saying He sat down permanently. It is saying the offering was made permanently, once, with a duration built into it.

That matters for a woman with a shorthand version and a trailing off, because it means the thing she is topping up was never issued with an expiry.

Nobody renews a thing that was made for ever. That is not devotion, it is a category confusion, and it is an entirely honest one, and it has been costing her four minutes and twenty seconds a day for six years.

You have an offering made with for ever written into it, and there is no expiry on it to watch. Scripture attaches the duration to the offering rather than to the posture, and the same Spirit at work in that letter is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where it cannot be skipped. If the small unease has grown into something bigger, if the mornings have started to be governed by it, or if the nights have gone long and the thinking has traveled out toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in your faith. God has always worked through people, and one across the table from you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

The repetition is not unbelief

Now I want to say the thing I would want said to me, and I want it said plainly because I suspect it is the accusation running underneath the whole six years.

Bringing it again is not unbelief.

If it were unbelief, then every psalmist who said the same thing twice would be in trouble, and David said some things far more than nine times. Repetition is not the mark of a person who does not believe. It is very often the mark of a person who cares a great deal, and it is nearly always the mark of a person who was never told the obligation had been lifted.

What is going on in most cases is not doubt about God. It is a habit built in the shape of an obligation that has since been removed, and the habit has outlived the reason for it, the way habits do.

You are running a habit whose reason was removed a long time before you formed it. Hebrews 10:12 announces a finished offering and a seat, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a kitchen.

I am not going to tell you the habit stops tomorrow. It might take a while and it might not go entirely, and that would not mean anything had failed. There is no schedule here and anybody who hands you one made it up.

You are clean right now, and this morning's version changed nothing about it in either direction. It is written and it is finished, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a finished thing real in a body.

The breakthrough

Now the turn, and it is about the difference between may and must.

You may bring it. Forever, as often as you like, and He will receive it every time with no trace of impatience. That door is not closing and I would not close it if I could.

You do not have to. That is what has changed, and it changed before you were born.

You are clean, this morning, and there is no requirement standing on you to establish that again. Hebrews 10:12 says one sacrifice for sins for ever and then says He sat down, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your prayer who makes that word real in a woman at her own counter.

And the second, which is the one that gets a person through the four minutes without the shorthand.

You have nothing to top up, and having nothing to top up is not you becoming careless. The written announcement puts the duration inside the offering and there is no expiry to watch, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on your morning routine, so the habit can run without carrying any weight.

Pour the coffee. It is done.

Declare this over yourself

Say this out of the place you stand in, not because of what you did or did not pray this morning. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a person the right to speak over their own life. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a flat voice carries them as well as a full one. And what God does with the habit is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Same prayer, the ninth time, you are a good prayer and you are not a payment. Hebrews 10:12 says one sacrifice for sins for ever, and then it says He sat down, and there were never any chairs in that room before Him. In the name of Jesus you go back to being something I may do and not something I must, and I am pouring the coffee.
  2. Small unease that runs the morning, you have no right to govern this kitchen. His word attaches the words for ever to the offering itself, so there is no expiry anywhere for me to watch, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that in me whether I feel it or not.
  3. Lord, You sat down, and Hebrews 10:12 makes that the loudest piece of furniture in the whole of Scripture. I am taking You at Your word at this counter, and I am starting the day with nothing owing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
