She does it Saturday mornings, always has, and it takes twenty five minutes with the chairs up on the table and the back door open.
By Wednesday it looks like it did before she started.
Not filthy. She would want that said and it is true. It is a working kitchen in a house with a dog and a man who comes in from outside and grandchildren on Tuesdays, and by Wednesday there is a general condition that anybody would recognize and nobody would remark on.
Wilma is sixty eight. She has mopped that floor something like two thousand five hundred times.
And a few months ago, wringing the mop out into the bucket, she said out loud to nobody: what exactly is the point of this.
She did not mean it about the floor. She knew that as she said it and she stood there for a moment with the mop in her hand.
She has been going to church since she was five. Sixty three years. Every Sunday puts something in and every week takes it out, and she has been doing that arithmetic quietly for a while, and the number of times she has done it is not far off two thousand five hundred either.
If your Saturday works like that, this is written for you. And I want to give you one verse with a subject in it, because everything turns on who the subject is.

Who is the subject
Here is the verse.
Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.
He which hath begun.
That is the subject of the sentence, and I want to stay on it, because a great many people carry this verse around and read themselves into it somewhere and there is nowhere to be read in.
He began it. He will perform it. Two verbs, one subject, and it is not the reader in either case. The reader appears in that sentence exactly once, as the location: in you.
That is the whole grammar. Somebody began a work in a place, and that somebody will complete it, and the place has no verbs.
You are the location of a work rather than a party to it. Philippians 1:6 puts both verbs on Him and leaves the reader as the site, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written grammar and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands over a bucket.
And that is a direct answer to two thousand five hundred repetitions.
Because the arithmetic assumes a job that she is doing and losing. Something goes in on Sunday and something wears off by Wednesday, and the score across sixty three years has been quietly totting up, and the total is not encouraging.
The verse describes a job that somebody else is doing, in a place, over a period. And a place does not have a score.
You have never once been the one keeping the count, because the work was never being done by you. It is written with both verbs in His mouth, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written undertaking into a life, which is why it holds standing over a bucket on a Saturday morning.
Perform is a finishing word
Now the second verb, because it is not the word people assume.
Will perform it.
That is old English and it does not mean carry out, in the sense of doing an ongoing activity. The word behind it means to bring to completion, to finish off, to carry through to the end. It is a word about arrival rather than about effort.
So the promise is not that He will keep working at it, which would be encouraging but would leave the outcome open. It is that He will finish it.
And there is a duration attached. Until the day of Jesus Christ, which is to say for as long as it takes, and the length of the undertaking is stated as a period that ends at a point He picks rather than at a point anybody has to reach.
You are inside an undertaking to finish rather than an undertaking to keep trying. Scripture uses the word for bringing to completion and attaches a duration to it, and the same Spirit at work in that letter is the one testifying inside a person now.
Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the question over the bucket has been coming back more often, if sixty three years has started to feel like an arithmetic rather than a life, if the nights have been getting long or the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Ring your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in anybody's faith. God has always worked through people.
Two thousand five hundred is not a score
Now the thing this whole category is for, and I want it said plainly over a bucket.
Two thousand five hundred is not a score.
It is a number of Saturdays in a long life in a house where people live, and a floor that gets used is a floor that gets mopped, and the alternative to a floor that needs mopping is a house with nobody in it, and nobody in that family is proposing that.
And nothing in Scripture grades a life by how much of Sunday is still detectable on a Wednesday. There is no passage anywhere that measures a believer by retention across a week, and if there were it would be a passage that rewarded people with quiet houses and no grandchildren on Tuesdays, and nobody has ever wanted to write that down.
A week that takes it all off has taken nothing that God declared. The state is not a coat of polish on a floor. It is not the kind of thing a Tuesday wears through.
You are in the same state on Wednesday that you were in on Sunday, and no week has ever had the standing to alter it. Philippians 1:6 runs the undertaking to a completion He picks without measuring anybody's retention, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.
And I am not going to tell you the floor starts holding until Friday. It will not. That is what a working kitchen is.
You are clean right now with the floor already going, and the floor has never once been a witness. It is written and it is undertaken, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes an undertaken thing real in a body.
This is the turn, and it turns on the subject of the sentence.
The arithmetic assumed a job she was losing. There is no job she is losing. He began it, He will finish it, and she is the place it is happening in, and a place does not carry a score.
You are a work in progress that somebody else undertook, this morning. Philippians 1:6 puts both verbs on Him and attaches a duration He sets, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a woman standing over a bucket.
And the second, which is the one that lets a person mop the floor gladly.
You have nothing to keep, and having nothing to keep is not you giving up on anything. The written undertaking is His from beginning to completion and was never handed to anybody to maintain, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on a floor to hold, so Wednesday can be Wednesday.
Declare this over yourself
Say this because of where you stand, not because of what the week does to a floor. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a person the right to speak over their own week. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a tired voice carries them as well as a strong one. And what God does about the wearing off is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.
- Floor I mop on Saturday, you are linoleum and you are not a verdict. Philippians 1:6 says He which hath begun a good work will perform it, and both of those verbs are His and neither one is mine. In the name of Jesus you go back to being a working kitchen floor.
- Arithmetic of sixty three years, you have no right to run in this house. His word puts the person in that sentence exactly once, as the place it is happening, and a place does not carry a score, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that in me this morning.
- Lord, You began it and You will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ, and Philippians 1:6 makes that a finishing and not a trying. I am taking You at Your word over this bucket, and I am going to put the kettle on.
