Clean All Week1 John 1:7

They Never Come Out Clean

This message is for the man whose work clothes never come out of the wash actually clean, who has started to feel exactly that way about his own week, and needs a cleanness that survives contact with an ordinary week

The whites are not white. They have not been white since about the third month and it is now the fourth year and he has stopped pretending it is a solvable problem.

He has tried. That is worth saying because it is not laziness. He has tried the pre soak and the good detergent and the thing his sister in law swore by and once, in a burst of optimism, a second wash straight after the first one, which achieved nothing at all except to use a great deal of hot water.

Work clothes do not come out clean. That is the fact of it. They come out cleaner. There is a permanent gray that arrives after a few months and then stays exactly where it is, and every man in that trade has a wardrobe that looks the same, and nobody thinks anything of it.

Elias is thirty seven. He hangs them out on a Sunday evening because the week starts at six on Monday.

And about eight months ago, hanging them, he thought a thing he has not been able to unthink: that this is what his weeks are like. Cleaner. Never clean. A permanent gray that arrived at some point and settled.

If your washing never comes out white, this is written for you. And I want to give you one verb, because the tense of it is doing something that no English translation quite manages to carry.

They Never Come Out Clean

The tense of that verb

Here is the line.

the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Cleanseth.

Now, in English that reads as a general truth, a bit timeless, the sort of thing you would put on a plaque. And the Greek behind it is a present tense that carries an ongoing sense, and it is better rendered: keeps on cleansing.

Not cleansed. Not has cleansed, though other verses say that too and mean it. This one is a running verb, an action in progress, something that is happening rather than something that happened.

That is a different kind of promise from the one most people are carrying, and I want to be exact about why it matters for a man on a Sunday evening.

Because a completed action fits a completed situation. It suits a moment. It is perfect for a conversion, or for a day something was settled, and it is glorious.

An ordinary week is not a moment. It is a continuous condition with continuous contact, and what a continuous condition needs is a continuous action, and this verse is exactly that.

You are being cleansed continuously rather than having been cleansed once and now running down. 1 John 1:7 uses a present tense that carries the ongoing sense, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written tense and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands at a washing line.

And that undoes the arithmetic of the gray.

The gray arrives because there is contact, repeatedly, and the wash is a discrete event that happens once a week against a contact that happens continuously. Of course the gray settles. The mathematics of it are inevitable and no detergent solves a timing problem.

What this verse describes is not a better wash. It is a cleansing that runs at the same rate the contact does.

You have a cleansing that runs continuously against a contact that runs continuously. It is written in the ongoing present, and His Spirit is the one carrying a running action into a life, which is why it holds standing at a line on a Sunday evening.

As he is in the light

There is a phrase before it that sets the condition, and it is worth reading properly.

If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Now, walk in the light gets heard as a standard. Live rightly, and then this applies. And so a man with a gray week reads it and does the arithmetic and knows how he comes out.

Read the comparison in the middle. As he is in the light. Not as brightly as He is. The comparison is between two locations, not two performances: He is in the light, and we walk in the light, which is to say in the same place He is.

Walking in the light means being where He is rather than performing to a level He sets. And a man in his own back yard on a Sunday evening is in the same light as he was in on Sunday morning, because the light in that sentence is a place and not a score.

You are in the same light on a Sunday evening as at any other hour, because it names a place. Scripture makes the comparison locational rather than a standard, and the same Spirit at work in that letter is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the permanent gray has spread into a general account of your life, if a week has started to feel like something you are failing rather than living, if the nights have been getting long or the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Call your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If tonight is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in anybody's faith. God has always worked through people.

Cleaner is not a failure

Now the thing this category is for, and I want it said plainly under a washing line.

Cleaner is not a failure.

Every man in that trade has the same wardrobe. That is not a group of men who have collectively failed at laundry. It is what happens to cotton that goes into real work, and the alternative to a gray shirt is a man who does not work, and nobody is proposing that.

And nothing in Scripture grades a week by how much of Sunday is still detectable on a Friday. There is no passage that measures a believer against the whiteness of their week, and if there were it would reward the people with the least contact, which is not a doctrine anybody has ever wanted to say out loud.

A gray week has canceled nothing. It has not reversed one thing God declared, because a state God declared is not the kind of object that takes a stain.

You are in the same state on Friday that you were in on Sunday, and no week has ever had the standing to change it. 1 John 1:7 runs the cleansing continuously without reference to the week's quality, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you the whites come back. They will not. That is what the job does to cotton and it is not a moral matter.

You are clean right now with the gray exactly where it is, and the gray has never once been a witness. It is written and it is running, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a running thing real in a body.

The breakthrough

This is the turn, and it turns on the tense.

The arithmetic assumed a discrete wash against continuous contact, which is a losing arrangement and always was. The verb in that verse is not a wash. It is a running action, in the present, at the same rate the week runs.

You are being cleansed continuously, this evening, at exactly the rate the week is happening. 1 John 1:7 carries the ongoing sense in its own tense, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a man hanging out work clothes on a Sunday.

And the second, which is the one that lets a man get up at six on Monday.

You have nothing to keep on top of, and having nothing to keep on top of is not you letting things go. The written cleansing runs on its own and was never handed over to be timed against anything, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on a whiter wash, so the gray can be the gray.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these because of where you stand, not because of what the week has done to the cotton. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a man the right to speak over his own week. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a tired voice carries them as well as a strong one. And what God does about the gray is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Work clothes on the line, you are cotton and you are not a report. First John 1:7 says cleanseth in a tense that keeps on running, at the same rate the week runs. In the name of Jesus you go back to being work clothes, and I will hang you out again next Sunday.
  2. Arithmetic of a permanent gray, you have no right to hang in this yard. His word makes walking in the light a place and not a standard, the same light He is in, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that in me this evening.
  3. Lord, the blood of Jesus keeps on cleansing, and First John 1:7 puts that verb in the present and leaves it running. I am taking You at Your word under this line, and I am starting Monday clean.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
