The Name He Stopped Using

His grandmother called him Toño. His mother still does, on the phone, and he lets her, and it does not cost him anything because she has always said it the same way.

Everyone else calls him Antonio now. He is forty seven. On his email at work it is Antonio, on the door of the shop it is Antonio, and when the new guys came in three years ago he introduced himself as Antonio and none of them have ever heard the other one.

There was no announcement. He did not make a decision and tell people. It happened over about eighteen months and it happened by him simply not offering the short one anymore, and by the time anybody could have noticed, there was nobody left in his day who used it.

He would tell you he grew out of it. That is a perfectly good answer and it is the one he gives, and it is not exactly a lie.

The truth is that the short one belongs to a stretch of years that another person did something in, and the name has been in the room ever since, and he stopped carrying it the way a man stops carrying anything that has gotten heavy.

Something was done to him. That is the whole of what I will say about it, and nothing in this article will ask him, or you, for one word more.

Now I want to say plainly who this is written for, because on this site that is the first thing.

This is not written for somebody who did a thing and cannot get the sense of it off. There are articles here for that reader and they are written with care, and this is not one of them.

This is for the person carrying a shame that came out of another person's actions.

And before anything else: it was not yours. Nothing about you contributed to it, and this article will never turn around and ask you to check. There is nothing there to check.

Double is an inheritance word

Here is the verse.

For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double.

Now, the natural reading is compensation. A thing was taken, so God gives twice as much back, like an insurer settling a claim.

That is not what double meant to the people who first heard it.

The double portion is inheritance language. It is what the firstborn son received: two shares where every other son received one. It was not a payment for damages. It was a position in a family, with a status attached to it, and it went to a particular person because of who they were in the household and not because of what had happened to them.

So God is not writing a check against a loss. He is moving somebody into the firstborn's place.

You have been given a firstborn's portion, and it was a position in a family rather than a settlement of a claim. Isaiah 61:7 says double and means the inheritance share, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written standing and makes it actual in a person, so it does not rest on how much of it you can feel walking to your car.

And that matters here more than anywhere, because compensation implies a transaction in which you are the injured party filing a claim, and a person who has been carrying something for twenty years has usually stopped believing they would win one.

A position is different. Nobody has to make a case for a position. It is assigned.

You are in a place in the household that was assigned rather than awarded, and no argument of yours was ever needed to secure it. It is written as an inheritance and not as a payout, and His Spirit is the one carrying an assigned standing into a life, which is why it does not thin out on an evening when nothing in you agrees.

Whose ledger it was on

Now the four words at the front of the sentence, because this is the part I would put in a man's hand.

For your shame.

That is an accounting phrase. It is the language of something being paid out against an entry. And the entry is named as shame, not as sin.

Read what that does. God takes the shame, treats it as a line item that has to be answered, and answers it Himself out of His own estate. He does not hand it back to the person carrying it and ask them to account for it. He does not ask how it got there, or whether they were partly responsible for the balance, or what they were doing standing near the ledger.

He takes the entry as something owed to them and settles it in their favor at double.

That is the shape of the whole thing. The shame is on His side of the book as a thing to be answered, and it has never once been on yours as a thing to be settled.

You were never the account holder on that entry, and Scripture puts it on the other side of the book from you. The word says for your shame ye shall have double, and the same Spirit at work through that whole chapter is the one testifying to it inside a person now.

I want to put this here, in the middle, where nobody can skip it, and say it warmly. Getting a person alongside you is part of what God is doing rather than a lesser version of it. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor who knows this ground. You do not need to describe anything to make that appointment and a good one will never require it. And if the nights have gone long, if the thinking has traveled past the ache and out toward wishing you were not here, call or text 988 or your local crisis line tonight and let a human being be with you in it. None of it is a failure of faith. God has always worked through people.

And one more thing that belongs right here. Nothing in this verse waits behind you forgiving anybody. Not on a schedule, not as a condition, not at all. Whatever is between you and the person who acted is yours and God's at your own pace, and it stands in front of nothing here.

In their own land

There is one more phrase and it is about location.

Therefore in their land they shall possess the double.

Not somewhere else. Not in a new country where nobody knows anything. In their land, which is to say, in the actual place where the thing happened.

That is a hard and a very good sentence. God does not offer a person a relocation as the terms of the settlement. He does not say the only way to hold a double portion is to become somebody nobody has ever heard of. The restoring happens on the same ground.

Which has a bearing on a name.

You have a double portion held in the very place it was lost, and God did not require you to move to receive it. Isaiah 61:7 says in their land and puts the possession on the same ground, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a person.

Now I am not going to tell you to start using the short one again. That is not mine to hand out. It is your name, and what you are called is yours to decide, and there is nothing spiritual to prove either way, and a man who kept Antonio for the rest of his life would be losing nothing.

What I will tell you is which of the two things is load bearing. Not the name. The ledger.

You are clean right now under either name, and the name has never once been the thing giving evidence. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
