Stain LiftedIsaiah 43:1

The Seat Nearest the Door

This message is for the woman who takes the seat nearest the door in every room she walks into, carrying shame that belongs to another person's actions, and needs to put down a stain that was never hers

It is a book group, which she likes, and there are nine of them, and they meet in Carol's front room and it is genuinely one of the better things in her week.

Rosa is always in the chair by the door.

Not always by design. That is what she tells herself. Sometimes she arrives last, sometimes it is the only one left, sometimes somebody moves and it works out that way. If you tracked it over four years you would find that it has worked out that way something like ninety percent of the time, and no one has tracked it, and no one is going to.

She would not describe it as a rule. It is not a rule. It is more that the other chairs, the deep one by the window, the end of the sofa where you have to climb over somebody's legs, are chairs she does not take, and she has never had to think about why, and she does not want to think about why now, in Carol's front room, with the tea going round.

Something was done to her. That is all I am going to say about it and this article will never ask her, or you, for one word more.

And she chooses the chair by the door in a room full of women who love her.

I want to be plain about who I am writing to, because on this site that comes before anything else.

I am not writing to somebody who did a thing and cannot get the sense of it off. That reader is real, and there are articles here written carefully for them, and this is not one of them.

I am writing to the person carrying a shame that came out of another person's actions.

And before we begin: it was not yours. Nothing about you was a factor. This article will not turn around later and ask you to check that, because there is nothing there to check.

The Seat Nearest the Door

What shame does to a name

Here is something I have watched for a long time and have never seen anybody say out loud.

Shame turns a person into a category.

Guilt says: you did a thing. That is specific and it is about an act, and however heavy it is, the person survives it as a person, because an act is something separate from you that you can be forgiven for.

Shame does not work like that. Shame says: this is a kind of person. It generalizes. It takes a person with a name and a laugh and eleven down half filled in and converts them into a type, and the type has no name and needs none, because types do not require names.

That is why it can be so hard to say out loud. There is nothing to report. A person cannot go and tell somebody they have become a category.

And it is why the chair by the door is not really about the door. It is what a person does when they have quietly stopped believing they occupy a specific place in a room.

You are being addressed by a God who has never once dealt with you as a category, and He said so with a name. Isaiah 43:1 says I have called thee by thy name, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written specificity and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much you can feel it in a front room on a Tuesday.

And nothing in that verse waits behind you forgiving anybody. Not on a schedule, not as a condition, not at all. Whatever is between you and the person who acted belongs to you and God at your own pace, and it stands in front of none of this.

You have a standing that no unfinished business of any kind is holding up. It is written with no condition in front of it, and His Spirit is the one carrying an unconditional thing into a life, which is why nothing you have not managed yet moves the state.

I have called thee by thy name

Here is the whole line.

Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.

Three clauses, and the middle one is the one that stopped me.

I have called thee by thy name.

He does not say I know about you. He does not say I am aware of your situation. He does not say I have taken note of what happened, which is what a kind and busy person says.

He says the one thing shame cannot survive, which is that He has used the specific word that means only you.

That is not sentiment. In the Hebrew Scriptures naming is authority and it is intimacy at the same time. The one who names a thing is the one who has the standing to say what it is. And God, addressing a people who had every reason to think of themselves as a category by that point in their history, reaches past the category and uses the name.

You have been called by a name rather than described by a class, and God is the one holding the standing to do the naming. Scripture puts the naming in the first person and the perfect tense, and the same Spirit at work through that chapter is the one testifying to it in a person now.

Let me put this here, in the middle, in plain sight, and say it as warmly as I can. Getting a person alongside you is part of what God is doing and not a lesser version of it. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor who knows this ground. You do not need to describe anything at all to make that call and a good one will never require it. And if the nights have gone long, if the thinking has traveled past the ache and out toward wishing to be gone, call or text 988 or your local crisis line today and let a human being be with you in it. None of it is a failure of faith. God has always worked through people.

Thou art mine is a claim

And then the third clause, which is two words in Hebrew and does something no encouragement can do.

Thou art mine.

That is not a compliment. It is not God being warm about somebody. It is a claim of possession, spoken by the party with the right to make it, and possession is the language of who a person belongs to.

Which matters here specifically, because one of the quiet cruelties of what happens to a person in this situation is that it can leave them with a sense of having been claimed by an event. Owned, in some way they cannot describe and would not want to try, by a thing they had no part in choosing.

And into that God does not offer sympathy. He states ownership. He says, in effect: the claim on you is Mine, it was made before that, it stands after that, and no event has the standing to make a competing one.

You are claimed, and the claim on you is held by God rather than by anything that happened. Isaiah 43:1 ends with a possession clause and not with an encouragement, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a person.

Now I am not going to tell you that next Tuesday you take the deep chair by the window. I have no right to hand you that. If I gave you a date and you missed it you would file it as one more failure, and there is nothing here to fail at. The chair by the door is not sin and it is not unbelief.

You are clean right now sitting exactly where you sit, and the chair has never given evidence about anything. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.

The breakthrough

Now the turn, and it turns on the difference between a name and a category.

The chair is real and the choosing is sensible and nothing here calls it foolish. What is not real is the category, and the category is the whole of what has been heavy.

You are clean, at this moment, and in respect of that thing you were never anything else. Isaiah 43:1 names and then claims, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a woman sitting nearest the door in a room she likes.

And the second, and it is the one I would want said over me.

You have nothing to confess about it, and having nothing to confess is not you being let off. The written verse deals in redemption and naming and possession and never once asks the named one for an account, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on a report from you, so the habit can be in the room without being in charge of the room.

You do not have to be ready. There is nothing here you need to be ready for.

Declare this over yourself

Say this out of the place you stand in, not because of anything that was done to you. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that alone gives a person the right to speak over their own life. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a small voice carries them as well as a strong one. And what God does with the habit is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Seat nearest the door, you are a chair and you are not a verdict. Isaiah 43:1 says God called me by my name, which is the one word a category cannot survive. In the name of Jesus you go back to being a perfectly good chair, and I will sit wherever I like.
  2. Sense of having become a kind of thing, you have no right to stay in this room. His word names before it describes and claims before it comforts, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying in me that I was never a type.
  3. Lord, You said thou art mine, and Isaiah 43:1 makes that a claim rather than a kindness. I am taking You at Your word in this front room today, and I am sitting here with both hands open.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
