The Cord She Does Not Pull

It hangs from the hatch in the hallway ceiling, a length of white nylon with a wooden toggle on the end, and it is at exactly the height where a person walking under it does not have to duck and does not quite forget it is there.

She dusts around it. That is the honest detail. She has a cloth on a stick for the tops of the door frames and she does the hallway every few weeks and she goes around that cord.

Norah is fifty eight. The hatch has not been down in eleven years.

Her husband went up before he died, for the boxes at Christmas and once for a bird that got in, and after that it simply did not come down, and there was no decision anywhere. Nobody said anything. The first Christmas somebody else went and got the boxes and it was easier, and the second year nobody asked, and now it is eleven years.

There are things up there. She knows what is up there and she is not vague about it and she is not confused. She put some of it up there herself.

She is a woman of faith and it has never been a formality. She prays at the sink. She has prayed her family through some genuinely hard things and been the steady one.

And there is a cord in her hallway she goes around with a cloth on a stick.

If there is a hatch in your house or in your life, this is written for you. And before anything at all: nothing here will ask you to say what is up there. Not to a person, not to a group, not to me. This is between you and God and it stays that way.

The reason He gives

Here is the verse.

Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

Now, that is two questions and I want the second one, because the second one is the reason, and almost nobody reads it as a reason.

The first question is the famous half. Can anybody hide. And read on its own it sounds like a warning, and it has been preached as one plenty of times.

Then He gives the reason, and the reason is not what a person braces for. It is not: because I am watching. It is not: because I have eyes everywhere. It is not surveillance at all, and there is no word in it about looking.

It is: do not I fill heaven and earth.

The reason nothing is hidden is fullness. There is no location without Him in it, not because He patrols but because there is nowhere He is not already, in the way water is everywhere in the sea.

You are inside a fullness rather than under an eye, and the verse gives that as its own reason. Jeremiah 23:24 answers its own question with filling rather than with watching, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written reason and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands in a hallway.

That matters enormously for a woman who goes around a cord with a cloth on a stick, because the thing she is managing is not really a hatch. It is a sense of being observed in a house she is alone in, and a person cannot live comfortably under an eye and she has been trying for eleven years.

A fullness is a different experience entirely. Nobody feels watched by the air.

You have been living under an eye when the verse describes an atmosphere. It is written as filling and not as observing, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written fullness into a life, which is why it holds standing under a cord that has not moved in a decade.

There is no decision to find

Now I want to say something about the eleven years, because I suspect a woman like this has gone looking for a decision and been unable to find one, and has drawn a hard conclusion from that.

There was no decision. The looking turns up nothing because nothing was ever decided.

What happened is that the first Christmas somebody else got the boxes, and the second year nobody asked, and a thing which was originally about grief and about a ladder became a fact about a house, and it did that without any moment where a person chose it.

That is how most shut places happen. Not by a decision. By an absence of one, repeated until it hardened.

And I want to say why that matters: because a person who believes they decided will feel accountable for a decision, and will go looking for the moment they made it, and will not find one, and will then conclude that they must be the kind of person who does such things unconsciously, which is a far heavier accusation than the original one.

There is no decision to find. There is a thing that did not happen, eleven times.

You are carrying an absence rather than a choice, and there was never a moment for you to be accountable for. Scripture describes a God who fills rather than one who audits, and the same Spirit at work in that passage is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the going around has gotten heavier over the years, if the nights have been getting long, or if the thinking has traveled out past the ache and toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Ring your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. And you do not have to say one word about what is up there to do that: a good one will never require it, and a woman can be well helped for years without ever mentioning it. If tonight is a dark one, call or text 988 or a crisis line and let another human being be in it with you. That is not a failure of faith. God has always worked through people.

The cord is not a door

There is one more thing and it is about what a cord actually is.

A cord is not a lock. There is no key in this story. Nobody bolted anything and nobody hid a ladder, and the hatch would come down in about four seconds for anybody who reached up and pulled.

Which means the shut place has not been secured. It has been left, and left is a completely different condition from locked, and it does not require force to change.

I am not saying reach up. That is not what this is for. I am saying that a person who has been thinking of themselves as somebody with a locked room in their house has been carrying a heavier picture than the true one. It is not locked. It never was. It hangs there in white nylon at the height where you do not have to duck.

You have a thing left rather than locked, and left has never once needed force to change. Jeremiah 23:24 describes a God present everywhere by fullness rather than one held off by any barrier, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you that hatch comes down this year, or ever. It may not, and that would not be a failure, and there is no window closing on anybody.

You are clean right now with the cord exactly where it hangs, and the cord has never once been a witness about you. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
