Nothing HiddenProverbs 15:3

The Year He Does Not Keep

This message is for the man who has kept a meticulous journal for twenty years with one year missing from the shelf, and has never brought that year to God, who needs to open one shut place to God alone, safely

There are twenty volumes on that shelf and they are all the same, because he buys them a dozen at a time from the same place and has since he was twenty six.

He writes most nights. Not much. Four or five lines, what happened, occasionally something he wants to remember, and once a year at the front he writes the year on the spine in the same pen he has always used.

Twenty volumes. Twenty one years.

There is a gap between two of them, and if you took them all down and laid them out you would find it in about eleven seconds, and nobody has ever taken them down.

Levi is forty seven. He wrote in that year. That is the part he has never said to anybody and it is the part that sits heaviest. There was a volume. He kept it the whole way through and it is not that a year went unrecorded.

It is not on the shelf.

He is a believing man and the kind who reads properly, who will look a thing up rather than assume it. He prays with his wife. He would say God has all of him.

Except one volume and one gap.

If there is a year you do not keep, this is written for you. And before we go one step: nothing here will ask you to say anything about it. Not to a person, not to a group, not to me. This is between you and God and it stays that way.

The Year He Does Not Keep

The half that gets cut off

Here is the verse.

The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

Now, in twenty odd years of hearing that quoted I have almost never heard the whole of it.

It gets used as a warning and it gets cut at evil. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil. Full stop, ominously, and then somebody moves on to their point.

That is not the verse. The verse has four more words and they are the other half of a pair.

Beholding the evil and the good.

It is a merism. That is the technical name for it and Hebrew is full of them: you name the two ends in order to include everything in between. Heaven and earth means the whole created order. Rising up and lying down means all day. Evil and good means all of it, without exception and without emphasis on either end.

So this is not a verse about God watching for wrongdoing. It is a verse about the completeness of His attention, and the completeness is the point, and a person who has only ever heard half of it has been carrying a distorted picture that the text itself does not support.

You are being watched over completely rather than watched for, and the second half of the sentence settles which. Proverbs 15:3 names evil and good as a pair to mean everything, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written completeness and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands in front of a shelf.

And here is why that matters for a man with a gap.

He has taken one volume off a shelf because he believed it contained the evidence. And the verse he half knows says the eyes of the Lord are on the evil, so removing it makes a kind of sense: put the damning exhibit somewhere else.

The eyes are on the good in exactly the same measure. Which means the volumes still on that shelf are being seen just as fully, and the missing one was never the only thing under examination, and there is no exhibit, because this was never a trial.

You have every year seen with the same completeness, and not one of them was ever an exhibit. It is written as a pair naming the whole, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written completeness into a life, which is why it holds standing in front of a gap.

In every place

There is a phrase in the front half worth a minute too.

In every place.

Not in every heart. Not into every secret. In every place, which is spatial, and it is describing presence rather than penetration.

That distinction sounds fine but it is the difference between two very different experiences. Penetration means something being got into. Presence means somebody already being there.

And a volume that is not on a shelf is somewhere. It is in a place. Wherever it is, that place is one of the every places, and He was already there before the volume arrived, and He did not have to look for it because He was not anywhere else.

You have moved a thing from one place He fills to another place He fills. Scripture says in every place and describes presence rather than searching, and the same Spirit at work in that proverb is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the gap has gotten heavier over the years, if the nights have been getting long, or if the thinking has traveled out past regret and toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Call your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. And you do not have to say one word about the volume to do that: a good one will never require it, and a man can be well helped for years without ever mentioning it. If tonight is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. None of that is a failure of faith. God has always worked through people.

He kept it the whole way through

I want to say something about the fact that he wrote in it, because I suspect that is where the actual weight sits.

He did not stop writing. That is the detail he has never told anybody and it is the detail that has been reading, inside him, as the worst part.

I would read it the other way round.

A man who kept writing through a year like that was not concealing anything from himself. He was doing what he does, honestly, four or five lines a night, right through it. The removal came later, and removal from a shelf is a decision about a room, and it is not the same act as a lie.

The volume is honest. It was written by an honest man doing an honest thing on his ordinary nights. It is simply not in the row.

You wrote it honestly and moved it later, and those are two different acts entirely. Proverbs 15:3 describes complete presence rather than an inspection anybody could be caught by, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you that volume goes back on the shelf. It may never, and that would not be a failure of anything, and there is no window closing.

You are clean right now with the gap exactly where it is, and the gap has never once been a witness about you. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.

The breakthrough

Here is the pivot, and it turns on the four words that keep getting cut off.

The verse is not a warning about the evil. It names evil and good together, which is the Hebrew way of saying everything, and everything means the twenty volumes on the shelf just as much as the one that is not.

You are seen entirely, tonight, and the seeing was never aimed at one volume. Proverbs 15:3 names both ends of the pair to mean the whole, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a man standing in front of his own shelf.

And the second, which is the one that takes the weight off the gap.

You have nothing to produce and only something to permit, and permitting is far smaller than putting anything back. The written presence is in every place already and was never a search, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on a volume, so the gap can stay exactly where it is without shutting anybody out.

Declare this over yourself

You get to say this because of where you stand, not because of what is or is not in the row. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a man the right to speak over his own life. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a quiet voice carries them as well as a strong one. And what God does about the volume is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Year missing from the shelf, you are a gap between two books and you are not a verdict. Proverbs 15:3 names the evil and the good together, which is the Hebrew way of saying the whole of it, and nobody ever quotes the second half. In the name of Jesus you stop standing between us, and you may stay a gap.
  2. Reading that says I concealed it, you have no right to stand in this room. His word describes presence in every place rather than a search anybody could be caught by, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that in me tonight.
  3. Lord, Your eyes are in every place, and Proverbs 15:3 says beholding the evil and the good, both ends, meaning all of it and singling out none. I am taking You at Your word in front of this shelf, and I am saying You are already wherever that one is.
