The Back Row She Chooses

The first song is four and a half minutes and she knows it, because she has timed it, and she has been timing it for two years without ever admitting to herself that this is a thing she does.

She parks at nine forty. The service starts at nine thirty. There is a woman on the door who says good morning to her every week and means it, and she says good morning back, and she goes in through the second set of doors while everybody is standing and the room is loud.

Maddie takes the second seat from the aisle in the back row on the right. Same one. If somebody is in it she takes the one beside it and it bothers her more than she would like to say.

Nobody thinks anything of it. She is a regular. She is on the meal train list and she brought a lasagna in February and people are pleased to see her.

What she has never told anybody is that arriving in the quiet, walking into a room where people can turn around and see who came in, is not something she can currently do, and she has no interest at all in unpacking why with anybody who might ask.

Something was done to her. That is every word I am going to say about it and no part of this article will ask her, or you, for one more.

And ever since, without ever deciding to, she has behaved like a person under a charge.

Let me be exact about who I am writing to, because on this site that comes before everything else.

I am not writing to somebody who did a thing and cannot get the sense of it off. That reader matters and there are articles here for them and this is not one.

I am writing to the person carrying a shame that came out of what another person did.

And before we go any further: it was not yours. Nothing about you was a factor, and nothing in this article will circle back and ask you to check that, because there is nothing there to check.

Now is an adverb of time

Here is the sentence. It is famous and it is short and the small word in the middle is the one nobody reads.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.

Now.

That is an adverb of time, and Paul does not scatter those carelessly. He has spent seven chapters building an argument and at the top of the eighth he puts a stake in the ground and the stake is a moment. Not eventually. Not once matters have settled. Now, as of the writing, as of the reading, as of a Sunday morning at nine forty in a parked car.

The word behind condemnation is a legal one. It means a sentence handed down: the penalty phase, the thing a court imposes after it has decided. And Paul says there is not one.

You are under no sentence at this moment, and the verse fixes the moment with a word rather than leaving it to a process. Romans 8:1 says now and means the reader's own hour, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written moment and makes it actual in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands in a parking space.

And there is a second thing that has to be said plainly here, because on this subject a great deal of harm gets done by people meaning well. Nothing in that verse waits behind you forgiving anybody. Not on a schedule, not as a condition, not at all. Whatever is between you and the person who acted belongs to you and God at whatever pace is yours, and it does not stand in front of one syllable of Romans 8:1.

You have a standing right now with no clause in front of it, and nothing you have not managed yet is holding it up. It is written without a condition attached, and His Spirit is the one carrying an unconditional thing into a life, which is why the state does not move with your progress.

There was never a charge filed

Now here is the part I want to hand over slowly, because it is the piece that is specifically for the reader I am writing to.

A verse about condemnation is a verse about verdicts. And a verdict presupposes a charge. Somewhere upstream of every sentence there is an accusation, a trial, a finding.

For the reader who did something, Romans 8:1 says the sentence has been lifted, and that is glorious, and it is the whole gospel.

For the reader who had something done to them, it says that and it says something else at the same time, and this is the part almost nobody names out loud: there was never a charge in the first place.

Not a charge that was dropped. Not a charge that was answered and dismissed. A charge that was never filed, because there was nothing there to file. The behavior that has been going on for two years, the nine forty parking and the back row and the second seat from the aisle, has been a defense strategy in a case that does not exist.

You are not a defendant, and the seat you have been choosing was chosen for a trial that never opened. Scripture puts condemnation in the language of a court, and the same Spirit named all the way through that chapter is the one testifying inside a person that there is nothing on the docket.

I want to put this here, in the middle, in plain sight, and say it as warmly as I know how. Getting a person alongside you is part of what God is doing and it is not the smaller road. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor who knows this ground. You do not have to describe anything at all to make that call, and a good one will never ask you to. None of that is a failure of faith. God has always worked through people.

In Christ Jesus is a place

There is one more phrase and it is the location.

To them which are in Christ Jesus.

In is a preposition of place, not of achievement. Paul does not write to them which have managed, or to them which are ready, or to them which have processed it well. He writes in, which is where a person is, and the whole of Romans is about how somebody gets put there and it is not by their own arranging.

That matters for a woman in a back row, because a place is not something you perform. You can be in a room while feeling entirely unlike a person who belongs in it. Being in the room is not a mood. It is a fact about geography.

You are in Christ Jesus, which is a location rather than an accomplishment, and no feeling about it relocates you. Romans 8:1 uses a preposition of place on purpose, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a person, so where you are does not shift with how you feel about being there.

And I am not going to tell you that next week you walk in at nine twenty five. I have no right to hand you that, and if I gave you a date and you missed it you would file it as one more failure, and there is nothing here to fail at. The back row is not sin and the second seat from the aisle is not unbelief.

You are clean right now sitting exactly where you sit, and the seat is not giving evidence about anything. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
