He has been a bookkeeper for thirty one years and he is very good at it, and the thing he is best at is the thing nobody notices, which is that when a figure sits in the wrong place he finds it.
Not by hunting. By feel. Reuben will be halfway down a column he has looked at forty times and something will be off in a way he could not describe to you, and he will go back, and there it will be, three hundred and forty dollars parked under a heading it has no business being under.
He fixes it. It takes four seconds. It never bothers him again.
There is one entry in his own life that has been under the wrong heading for twenty six years and he has never been able to move it.
He knows it is under the wrong heading. That is what makes it so strange to him and what he would find hardest to explain if anybody asked, which nobody will. If you laid it out on paper in front of him as somebody else's case he would tell you in four seconds where it goes. He can see it perfectly. And it sits where it sits.
Something was done to him. That is the whole of what I am going to say and this article will not ask him, or you, for one word more.
Let me say plainly who I am writing to, because on this site it comes before everything.
I am not writing to somebody who did a thing and cannot get the sense of it off. That reader is real, there are articles here written carefully for them, and this is not one.
I am writing to the person carrying a shame that came out of what another person did.
And before we start: it was not yours. Nothing about you was a factor. This article will not turn around later and ask you to check, because there is nothing there to check.

God answers the accuser Himself
Here is the scene, and it is four verses long and it moves fast.
A man named Joshua is standing before the angel of the Lord, and there is an accuser standing at his right hand, which is the prosecutor's position, and the accuser is there to accuse him.
Then this.
And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan, even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?
Now watch the direction of the speech.
God does not turn to Joshua. He does not ask him for an account. He does not say, before we go on, tell me your side. He does not put the accused on the stand at all, not for one line, and Joshua never speaks in the entire scene.
God turns to the accuser and deals with the accuser directly.
I want to say that again because it is the whole thing. The accusation was not answered by the accused. It was answered over his head by somebody with more standing than either of them.
You are standing in a scene where the accusation was answered by God rather than by the one it was aimed at. Zechariah 3:2 has the Lord speaking to the accuser and never once to Joshua, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written scene and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how clearly you can hold it at a desk at the end of the day.
That is also why a man who can see the entry perfectly cannot move it. He is trying to file a correction in a court where he has no standing to file anything. The correction was never his to make. It has already been made by the only party with the authority to make it.
You have a correction already entered by somebody whose standing was never in question. It is written that the Lord Himself answered, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written correction into a life, which is why it holds on an evening when the column still looks wrong to you.
A brand plucked out of the fire
And then the question at the end of the rebuke, and it is the strangest and best thing in the passage.
Is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?
A brand is a stick from a hearth. Half burned, scorched down one side, marked all the way through by something it did not choose and could not have stopped. And God does not use that as a description of Joshua's failings. He uses it as the argument for him.
Read it again. The marks are the evidence. The state of the man is the case for the defense. God points at the burning and says: this one was pulled out of a fire, and that is what the accuser is looking at.
That is an extraordinary thing to say over somebody carrying what our reader carries, because the ordinary experience is the exact opposite. The ordinary experience is that the marks feel like evidence against you. That whatever is on you must indicate something about you.
God reads them the other way. The marks say a fire happened and somebody reached in.
You are being described by what was done to you, and God is using that description as the argument in your favor. Scripture calls the man a brand plucked out and offers it as the case rather than the charge, and the same Spirit inspiring that scene is the one testifying inside a person now.
Let me put something here, in the middle, in plain sight, and say it as warmly as I can. Getting a person alongside you is part of what God is doing and not the lesser road. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor who knows this ground. You do not have to describe anything to make that appointment and a good one will never require it. And if the nights have gone long, if the thinking has traveled past the ache and out toward wishing to be gone, call or text 988 or your local crisis line tonight and let a human being be with you in it. That is not a failure of faith. God has always worked through people.
And this belongs here too. Nothing in that scene waits behind you forgiving anybody. Not on a schedule, not as a condition, not at all. Whatever is between you and the person who acted is yours and God's at your own pace, and it stands in front of nothing here.
Even the LORD that hath chosen
One more thing, and it is the clause in the middle that people read past.
Even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee.
The rebuke is grounded in something, and the ground is not Joshua's record. It is God's choosing. The argument runs: I rebuke you because I chose this place and this man, and My choice is the fact standing against every word of your accusation.
That means the whole case rests on a decision God made and not on a case anybody assembled. Nobody has to be a strong witness for themselves. Nobody has to establish that they were worth defending. The defense is the choosing, and the choosing happened first.
You are defended on the ground of a choice God made, and nothing you can or cannot say bears on it. Zechariah 3:2 grounds the rebuke in the choosing rather than in the record, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a person.
And I am not going to tell you the entry moves in your head tonight. I have no right to hand you that, and if I gave you a date and you missed it you would file it as one more failing, and there is nothing here to fail at.
You are clean right now with the column still looking wrong to you, and the column has never once been a witness. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
Here is the hinge of it, and it turns on who does the answering.
The entry is real and it is under the wrong heading and nothing here is pretending otherwise. What is not real is the idea that the correction is yours to make, and that idea is the whole of what has been heavy.
You are clean, tonight, and in respect of that thing you were never anything else. Zechariah 3:2 has God speaking to the accuser directly and calling the man a brand plucked out of the fire, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that real in a man sitting at his own desk.
And the second, and it is the one I would want said over me.
You have nothing to file, and having nothing to file is not you leaving something undone. The written scene never once turns to the accused for a statement, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on a submission from you, so the twenty six years can be behind you without being under your name.
You do not have to be ready. There is nothing here you need to be ready for.
Declare this over yourself
You get to say this because of where you stand, not because of anything that was done to you. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that alone gives a person the right to speak over their own life. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a quiet voice carries them as well as a strong one. And what God does with the entry is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.
- Entry under the wrong name, you are a clerical error and you are not a charge. Zechariah 3:2 has the Lord turning to the accuser and never once to the man being accused. In the name of Jesus you are corrected, and I am closing the ledger and going to bed.
- Instinct to keep the file ready, you have no right to stay at this desk. His word grounds the whole rebuke in God's own choosing rather than in anybody's record, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying in me that no hearing is scheduled.
- Lord, You called him a brand plucked out of the fire, and Zechariah 3:2 makes the marks the argument for him. I am taking You at Your word at this desk tonight, and I am standing here marked and defended.
Zechariah 3:2
