Clean WithinHebrews 9:14

The Sanitizer on the Dashboard

This message is for the man in a church parking lot using the sanitizer on his dashboard for the third time before he goes in, who needs to be made clean somewhere no washing reaches

The lot is about two thirds full and he has parked in the same spot he has parked in for six years, third row, under the tree that drops something sticky in June.

Dan has the engine off. The service starts in nine minutes. Through the windshield he can see the Petersons crossing toward the doors and the girl from the coffee team propping the second door open with the wedge, and everything about the morning is completely normal.

The bottle lives in the cup holder. It has lived there since a winter when everybody had a bottle in the cup holder, and most people's ran out and got thrown away eventually, and his got replaced.

He pumps it once. Rubs it in. Watches the Petersons get to the door.

He pumps it again. Works it around the knuckles, between the fingers, up over the wrists the way you are supposed to, and it evaporates cold, and he puts his hands back on the wheel.

Then he does it a third time, and then he gets out of the car.

He has not touched anything. He drove here from his own house. He knows that, and he is not confused about it, and if his wife had come with him this morning he would have done it once and thought nothing of it, which is a thing he has noticed and has never said out loud to anybody.

There was a thing about four years ago. He took it to God in this parking lot, actually, in this exact spot, and he has taken it back to God since, more times than he would like to count. He has read the passages. He teaches a class on Wednesday nights and he taught one of those passages in April and did it well.

And he sits in the third row of the lot on a Sunday morning and pumps the bottle three times before he can go in.

Let me name who I am talking to first, because two very different people find a page about being clean. I am talking to the one whose thing was theirs: done, confessed, believed forgiven, and still sitting there. If what you are carrying was done to you by another person, this page is not written to you and it does not speak to you as though you had sinned; another one on this site is yours, and it says so from its first line. If that first one is close to something in your week, wherever your version happens, I want to give you one verse. It is a big one and it is usually taught for other reasons, and there is a phrase in the middle of it that names your exact situation with a precision that took my breath the first time somebody showed me.

The Sanitizer on the Dashboard

Look at what the verse is aimed at

Here is the sentence.

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Now, most of the time when that verse gets preached, the weight lands on the first half. The blood of Christ. And that is right and it is glorious and it is the engine of the whole thing.

But read what it says the blood is aimed at, because it is remarkably specific and it is not what most people expect.

Purge your conscience.

Not purge the record. The record matters enormously and Scripture deals with it in a dozen other places. This verse aims somewhere else. It aims at the organ that keeps producing a verdict after the verdict is in. It aims at the thing sitting in a man in a parked car nine minutes before a service he is not late for.

You are the target of that sentence in the exact place where nothing else has ever landed. Hebrews 9:14 says conscience and not ledger, and it names the Spirit, the eternal Spirit, inside that same verse as the one through whom the offering was made, so this does not rest on how convincingly you can feel it in a third row parking space.

I want you to notice how kind that is. God did not deal with the paperwork and leave you holding the residue. He aimed at the residue on purpose. Somebody looked at the specific problem of a man who knows he is forgiven and cannot get the sense of it off, and wrote a promise pointed straight at it.

You have a promise written for the second problem, not only the first, and it was aimed there deliberately. It is written into that verse in one word and the word is conscience, and His Spirit is the one who takes an aimed promise and lands it in a life, which is why it holds on a morning when you feel nothing at all in the car.

From dead works

Now the phrase that took my breath, and it is three words.

From dead works.

A dead work is not a sin. Read it in context and you will see the writer is not talking about wickedness at all. He is talking about religious activity that cannot produce life. Things done sincerely, done well, done with real devotion, that were never able to accomplish the thing the doer is asking of them.

So a dead work, in the sense this verse means it, is a good action that has been assigned an impossible job.

The bottle in the cup holder is not wicked. Washing your hands is not wicked. Saying a thing to God again is not wicked, and I want to be careful here because the last thing anybody needs is to be told that praying about it again was the sin. It was not, and God does not roll His eyes at a man who comes back.

But an action that is being asked to purge a conscience is being asked for something it does not have. And what this verse says is not that you must stop. It says the blood purges the conscience from those works. It releases you from the obligation to keep running them. The freedom is removed from the have to column, not from the may column.

You have been released from the requirement to make it work, and the release is not the same thing as being told off for trying. Scripture calls them dead works with no scorn in the sentence at all, and the same Spirit named in that verse is the one testifying to the release inside a person.

Something needs saying here in the middle and not tucked at the end. If the routine has grown until it is eating your mornings, or if the nights have gotten long and the thinking has traveled past regret into wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Call your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be in it with you. That is not the smaller road and it is not a hole in your faith. God has always worked through people, and a trained one sitting across from you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

How much more

Then there is the shape of the argument, and this is where I want to leave the teaching, because it is the most reassuring piece of reasoning in the book.

How much more.

The writer has just been describing the old covenant washings, the ones that dealt with the outside, and he says: if that reached the flesh, how much more will this reach the conscience.

That is an argument from the lesser to the greater. It works by scale. And what it means for a man in a car is that whatever confidence he might have placed in an outward washing, he is entitled to place more in this one. Not equal confidence. More.

You have more ground to stand on here than in anything you have ever done with water, and the verse says so in those words. How much more is written into Hebrews 9:14 as the whole structure of the argument, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a written argument actual in a man, so the standing does not shrink on a morning when nothing in him is moving.

And now let me be straight with you. I am not going to tell you the third pump stops today. That is not mine to promise and I would rather be useful to you than encouraging for ten minutes. The state and the sensation are two separate items and they do not always show up on the same Sunday.

You are clean right now while your hand is still on the bottle, and the hand on the bottle has no standing to testify. It is written and it is finished, and it is His Spirit and not the strength of your agreement who makes a finished thing live in a body.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is a short one, and it faces a man toward the doors.

Stop asking the bottle. Not because the bottle is wrong. Because you can finally name what the third pump was reaching for, and a man who knows what he is actually after can put it back in the cup holder.

You are clean at this moment, in the conscience, which is the exact place the gel never reached. Hebrews 9:14 aims the blood of Christ there by name, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your amen who makes that land in a man sitting in the third row of a parking lot.

And then the second thing, which is what gets him out of the car.

You have nothing further to run, and having nothing to run is not a deficiency in you. The word calls them dead works and releases you from them without a word of scorn, and the Spirit who applies that release is not standing by waiting for your feelings to sign underneath, so the pull toward the bottle can be in the car without driving the car.

The service starts in nine minutes. Go in. Somebody saved you a seat.

Declare this over yourself

Say this out of the place you stand in and not because of how the morning has gone. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the standing that gives a person the right to speak over their own life. Scripture is the ground under all three lines, and the Holy Spirit carries them, so a shaky voice carries them just as well as a steady one. And what God does with the pull toward the bottle is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Bottle on the dashboard, you are two ounces of gel and you are not a court. Hebrews 9:14 aims the blood of Christ at the conscience by name, and that was aimed and landed long before I pulled into this row. In the name of Jesus you go back to being what you are for, and I am going in.
  2. Fear of what they would think of me, you have no right to stay in this vehicle. His word calls them dead works and releases me from them without one word of scorn, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that release in me whether I feel it this morning or not.
  3. Father, You aimed at my conscience, and Hebrews 9:14 says how much more, which means I get to stand here with more confidence and not less. I am taking You at Your word in this parking lot, and I am walking in clean.
