Clean Within1 Corinthians 6:11

The Steam on the Bathroom Mirror

This message is for the woman wiping steam off a bathroom mirror at six in the morning to look at a face she has already washed twice, and needs to be made clean somewhere no washing reaches

Six o'clock and the whole room is white. She has had the shower too hot again, the way she likes it, and the glass has gone completely opaque and the extractor fan is doing what it can, which is not much.

Camille takes the flat of her hand and wipes an arc across the middle of the mirror.

It streaks. It always streaks. She wipes it again with the corner of the towel and gets a decent oval and stands in front of it, and there she is, and there is water still running down the tile behind her, and out in the hall the boiler is ticking.

She has washed twice this morning. Once in the shower, and then, before she got out, once more, and she knows how that sounds and she has never said it to a single person on this earth.

The thing she is looking for is not on her face. She has known that for a long time and she is not stupid and she is not confused about the nature of soap. She looks anyway, every morning, in the oval, for about four seconds.

Then she does her hair and gets on with the day and she is good at her job and people like her.

She confessed it years ago. Not carelessly. She has confessed it since, more than once, which she has decided is a private weakness and does not intend to discuss with anybody.

And at six o'clock she wipes an arc across a mirror and looks for four seconds and does not find it and starts the day.

First, who this is for, because it is not for everyone who arrives here. This is for the woman whose thing was her own: named to God, believed forgiven, and still there in the glass at six. If what is on you was put there by somebody else, this page is not yours and it will not speak to you as though it were; there is one on this site written for you, and it never once asks you to confess a thing that was not yours. If you have a version of those four seconds, wherever they happen in your morning, I want to give you one verse. It is short and Paul is angry a few lines before it, and there is a piece of grammar in the middle of it that I would put on the mirror if I thought anybody would leave it up.

The Steam on the Bathroom Mirror

Read the tense

Here is the verse.

And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Now the first four words. Such were some of you.

Were. Past tense. Paul has just finished a hard list, the kind of list that makes a room go quiet, and then he turns to the people in front of him and puts the entire list in a tense that has closed.

That is not sentimentality and it is not Paul going soft on anybody. He was not soft in the sentence before it. It is a man who knows exactly what he is looking at, choosing a tense on purpose.

And here is the thing about a mirror at six in the morning. A mirror can only ever show you the present. That is all it does. It has no tense but now, and a woman standing in front of one looking for evidence of something is asking a device that does not understand time to give her a verdict about history.

You were that, in a tense that has closed, and the sentence about you was written in the past on purpose. 1 Corinthians 6:11 says such were and not such are, and the Spirit of our God is named at the end of that same verse as the one who did it, so the reading of it does not rest on what the glass shows you at six.

Now I am not going to pretend Paul is saying the past did not happen. He is not. He names it. He names it plainly and he does not soften a word of it, and I love him for that, because a comfort that requires you to pretend is not a comfort, it is a con.

He names it and puts it in the past. Both. In the same sentence. That is the only kind of comfort worth having.

You have a past that is fully named and fully closed, and neither of those two facts cancels the other one out. It is written that way in one verse with a but in the middle of it, and His Spirit is the one who carries a written sentence into a bathroom at six, which is why it holds on a morning when the oval shows you nothing at all.

Three verbs, and not one of them is yours

Now count what comes after the but, because there are three of them and they are all built the same way.

Ye are washed. Ye are sanctified. Ye are justified.

Every one of those is passive. Washed, not washing. Sanctified, not sanctifying. Justified, not justifying yourself. In all three the people are the object of the sentence and somebody else is the subject, and Paul does not vary it once.

That is not an accident of translation. He is stacking them, and the effect of the stack is that by the third one there is nowhere left to insert a hand.

And that is why the second wash cannot do what it is being asked to do. It is not because a second wash is wicked. It is because a second wash puts you back in the active voice, and this verse has already put you in the passive one, and you cannot occupy both at the same time on the same subject.

You have three verbs standing over your life and every single one of them was done to you. Scripture stacks washed and sanctified and justified in the passive on purpose, and the same Spirit named in that verse is the one testifying to all three inside a person right now.

I want to put one thing here in the middle, where it belongs, and not hide it at the bottom. If the four seconds have grown, if the washing has started taking the morning, if the nights have gotten long and the thinking has traveled past regret and out toward wishing you were gone, get somebody alongside you. Call your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be in it with you. That is not the smaller road and it is not a crack in anybody's faith. God has always worked through people, and one sitting across from you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

In the name, and by the Spirit

And then look how the verse ends, because Paul does not leave the three verbs floating.

In the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

He names the authority the thing was done under, and he names the one who did it. That is a signature and a seal. The name of the Lord Jesus is the authority. The Spirit of our God is the agency. Between them there is no room at all for a fourth party, and the fourth party is the woman at the mirror trying to help.

That is the mercy in it. Not that your help was rejected. That your help was never on the paperwork, so there is nothing on the paperwork that can fail.

You are washed under a name that is not yours and by a Spirit that is not yours, and that is exactly why nothing in you can undo it. 1 Corinthians 6:11 puts the name and the Spirit at the end as the two authorities, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a written seal actual in a person.

Now let me be honest with you, because I would rather be useful than comforting for five minutes. I am not telling you the four seconds stop tomorrow. That is not mine to promise and I will not hand you something I cannot back. The state and the sensation keep separate hours and they always have.

You are clean right now while the oval is still showing you nothing, and the oval was never a witness in this case. It is written and it is finished, and it is His Spirit and not the strength of your agreement who makes a finished thing live in a body.

The breakthrough

This is where it moves, and it is a small thing, and you can do it standing right there in the steam.

Stop asking the mirror for a verdict about history. Not because looking is wicked. Because you can now name what the four seconds were reaching for, and a woman who knows what she is actually after can stop asking a device that only speaks in the present tense.

You are clean this morning, in the place the glass has never once been able to show, and God is the one who says so. 1 Corinthians 6:11 puts your past in the past and your washing in the passive, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your amen who makes that word real in a woman standing in front of an oval at six.

And then the second thing, which is the one that lets a woman get on with her day.

You have nothing to add to those three verbs, and having nothing to add is not a deficiency in you. The written verse signs itself with the name of Jesus and the Spirit of our God and leaves no line for a fourth signature, so the pull toward the second wash can be in the room without running the room.

Do your hair. Go to work. You are good at your job.

Declare this over yourself

Say this out of the place you stand in, not because of what the oval showed you. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a person the right to speak over their own morning. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them, so a voice with nothing behind it carries them just as well. And what God does with the four seconds is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Steam on the bathroom mirror, you are condensation and you are not a court. 1 Corinthians 6:11 says such were some of you, and it put the whole of it in a tense that closed long before I wiped the glass this morning. In the name of Jesus you go back to being steam, and I am going to do my hair.
  2. Private weakness I will not name to anybody, you have no right to stay in this house. His word stacks washed and sanctified and justified and puts every one of them in the passive, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to all three in me whether I feel a thing about it today or not.
  3. Lord, You washed me in the name of Jesus and by Your Spirit, and 1 Corinthians 6:11 signs it with both. I am taking You at Your word in front of this mirror at six, and I am going out into my day washed.
