Clean WithinPsalm 51:7

The Second Load of Laundry

This message is for the mother running a second load of laundry at eleven at night that did not need running, who confessed a thing months ago and still cannot get the sense of it off her, and needs to be made clean somewhere no washing reaches

The dryer buzzed twenty minutes ago. Those clothes are already out, already folded, already stacked in the basket on the kitchen chair with the sleeves tucked in the way her mother taught her. And Rachel is standing at the washer in the half dark with the detergent cap in her hand, running another load.

It is a small load. Two bath towels, a pillowcase, the gray sweatshirt she had on this afternoon. None of it is dirty. She knows perfectly well that none of it is dirty. She measures the detergent to the line anyway, and the blue of it catches the light from the range hood, which is the only light left on downstairs.

Eleven o'clock. Upstairs the house has stopped creaking, which is how she knows everybody is finally down. Through the window over the sink there is the neighbor's porch light, the shape of the maple, and nothing else.

She closes the lid. The machine fills. That first low rush of water, then the drum starting its slow turn, and she stands with both hands flat on the warm lid and lets the sound do whatever the sound does.

Here is the part she has never said to anybody. She confessed it. In March. Out loud, in her car, in a parking lot behind a grocery store, engine off, both hands over her face, and she meant every word of it, and she has not gone back and taken it up again since. She believes God heard her. She believes God forgave her.

And it is still on her.

Not on her hands. Not anywhere she could point to on a diagram. Somewhere behind the sternum there is a residue that does not come off, and the strange part, the part she would be embarrassed to explain to her husband, is that running a load of laundry helps. For eleven minutes it helps. Something in this house is being made clean and she is the one making it happen and the water is loud.

Then the cycle ends. The house goes quiet. It is still there.

She has showered twice today. She counted. That is how she knows.

If that is familiar, if the washing and the confessing and the washing again have left the sense of it sitting exactly where it always sat, then nothing has gone wrong with your repentance. That is the edge of what water reaches. This article is about what happens past that edge, and about who does it.

The Second Load of Laundry

Hyssop was never a scrubbing brush

There is a line in the Psalms that people quote in half. The half everybody knows is the snow. Here is the whole of it.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

That was written by a man who had done real harm and knew exactly what he had done. He is not asking to feel better about it. Read the request again and notice what he actually asks for: a plant.

Hyssop is a small woody bush with stiff little branches, and in the old covenant it had one job. It was a brush. Not a scrubbing brush, which is what a modern ear hears, because a modern ear hears cleaning and pictures effort. Hyssop was an applying brush. It was dipped into something, and the something was carried and put onto the thing that needed it. The plant did no cleaning at all. It only ever moved what somebody else had provided.

So when a man in the worst week of his life reaches for that word, he is not asking for a better technique. He is asking somebody else to hold the brush.

You are clean in the exact place your own hands were never going to reach, and the reaching was never assigned to you. That is what Psalm 51:7 asks for and what the cross answered, and the Spirit of God carries a finished thing off the page and into a person, so none of it stands or falls on how convincingly you can feel it at eleven at night.

The reason the second load is hard to argue a person out of is that it is not stupid. It is a good instinct pointed at the wrong surface. Something in her wants the inside handled and she has exactly one method available, so she runs it on the towels. The instinct is right. The reach is short.

And the whole point of the hyssop is that the reach was never hers.

You have a cleanness on you right now that was applied from the outside in, by somebody who does not need you to hold anything at all. It is written into that psalm and finished at the cross, and His Spirit brings a written verdict all the way down, which is why this holds on a night when nothing in you is cooperating.

Where the water stops

Let me be plain about the geography, because a lot of good people are running a machine at the wrong depth and calling themselves faithless for it.

Water reaches skin. That is not a small thing: God gave His people washing on purpose. But skin is where water stops. It has always stopped there. There is no soap in any aisle of any store that has ever once touched a conscience.

What sits behind Rachel's sternum is not on the skin layer at all. It is the sense of being marked, and that is a different thing from guilt, and the difference matters, because she is treating the second with the medicine for the first. Guilt is a legal fact with a legal remedy, and the remedy already came, and she took it in a parking lot in March. What is left is not the fact. It is the mark: the sense that the fact left a stain on the person rather than a charge on a page.

You were washed, and the washing went to the layer no basin was ever built to reach. Scripture keeps that word washed in the past tense on purpose, and the same Spirit who applied it is testifying to it inside a person now, which is why the argument in your chest is not evidence against the fact.

Something else has to be said here, in the middle, and not tucked at the bottom. If the nights have gotten long, if the washing has turned into something that will not stop, if the thought has gone past regret into wishing to be gone, please get a person alongside you. Call a doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If tonight is dark, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let a human being be in it with you. That is not a lesser option than prayer and it is not a failure of faith. God works through people with training and phones, and getting one alongside you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

Clean is a verdict, not a temperature

Here is the sentence this whole site is built on, and I want to hand it over slowly.

Clean is something God says. It is not something you generate.

That sounds obvious until you notice how everybody actually checks. We check by temperature. We consult the chest, and if the reading is low we conclude the transaction did not go through and we run it again, which quietly promotes our own internal weather to judge.

You have a verdict standing over you that does not consult your chest before it stands. That is the force of Psalm 51:7 in the mouth of a man who plainly felt terrible while he said it, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a kitchen at eleven at night, which is the only reason a person can hold a fact they cannot feel.

Notice the part people skip. David asks to be made clean and then keeps writing. He goes on to ask for joy, later, as a separate item. He knows the two are different things and does not pretend the second arrived because the first was granted. That is not weak faith. That is a man being accurate.

So let me be accurate too. I am not going to tell you the residue lifts tonight. That is not mine to promise. What I am telling you is that the verdict does not wait for the residue, and a person can stand on one while the other is still in the room.

You are not required to produce evidence for something God has already put in the record. It is written, and it is His Spirit and not the strength of your agreement who makes a written thing real in a body, so the standing does not thin out on a night when you feel nothing at all.

The breakthrough

Here is where it turns.

The machine is not the enemy. Set down the self accusation about the laundry, the sink, the showers. That instinct is a good instinct wearing the wrong shoes. It wants the inside dealt with, and it is right to want it, and it has been reaching with the only tool a person can buy.

So we hand the brush over. Not try harder at holding it. Hand it over.

You are clean, at this moment, in the place behind the sternum, and God did that and God says so. Psalm 51:7 is the ask and the cross is the answer and it is finished, and it is His Spirit, not the volume of your amen, who makes a finished thing land inside a person who is standing in a dark kitchen with her hands on a warm lid.

And now the second thing, which is the one that lets a person sleep.

You have nothing left to add to it, and the nothing is not a lack in you. The word says one offering has perfected forever those who are being made holy, and the Spirit who applies it does not require your feelings to countersign, so the residue can be in the room without owning the room.

Feel that or do not feel it. Both readers get the same verdict. That is not a consolation prize for the ones who feel nothing. That is the actual architecture of it, and it is the reason this holds on a bad night instead of only on a good one.

Declare this over yourself

You can speak this because of where you are standing. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that, and nothing about tonight's mood, is what gives a person the right to open their mouth over their own life. Scripture is the ground under every line of it and the Holy Spirit carries the words, so a flat voice carries them exactly as well as a full one. And what God does with the residue is His to decide, spoken under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Second load at eleven at night, you are a load of towels and you are not a verdict. Psalm 51:7 asked for hyssop and not for scrubbing, and the answer came from outside me. In the name of Jesus I put the cap down and I let the machine be laundry.
  2. Feeling that I am not clean underneath, you have no right to stay in the seat of the judge. His word says I am washed, and it says it in the finished tense, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to it in me tonight whether I can feel Him doing it or not.
  3. Lord, You reached where my hands stop, and Psalm 51:7 says the washing goes all the way down. I am taking You at it in this kitchen at this hour, and I am going up to bed clean.
