Work has been done since a quarter to six. The gate is shut, the tank is topped up, the tools are back where they belong, and Ray is standing at the trough behind the barn with his sleeves pushed to the elbow and the water running.
It is a galvanized tank on a stand with a spigot his father put in forty years ago, and the water comes out cold enough to make your wrists ache in October. There is a bar of yellow soap in a jar lid on the ledge, gone soft in the middle, and a brush with bristles worn down on one side because he always works the same direction.
He has been at it a while. Long enough that the light has gone off the top of the ridge and the barn swallows have gone in.
His forearms are clean. They were clean four or five minutes ago. He is going over the same six inches of skin under his left wrist, and if you asked him what he was working on he would look down and be honest with you and say he could not tell you.
Two winters ago there was a thing. He is sixty one and he has been going to the same church since he was a boy and he is not a man who takes matters like that lightly. He said it out loud, to God, alone, in the cab of his truck on the county road with the heater running. He meant it. He has not gone back to it.
He believes he was forgiven. If you sat him down and asked him he would not hedge. He would say yes, and he would mean it, and then he would go out at the end of the day and stand at that trough for eleven minutes.
That is the part he cannot square. The believing is real. The standing is also real. And a man who has spent his life working with things that either hold or do not hold has a hard time with two true things that seem to argue.
Before the verse, say who is being spoken to, because two people read a page like this and only one of them is being addressed. I am speaking to the man or woman whose thing was their own: brought to God, believed settled, and still felt. If what you carry was done to you rather than by you, this is not your page and nothing in it treats you as though you had sinned; there is one on this site that was written for you. Now, if that first is you at a sink or a trough or a shower or wherever your version of it happens, I want to hand you the one verse I would want handed to me. It is old and it is short and there is a detail in it that most people walk straight past.

The one dye that never came out
Here is the verse.
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Now, most folks hear scarlet and think the man just picked a strong color for emphasis. He did not. He picked a technical one.
In that world, scarlet and crimson came out of a small insect that they crushed and cooked down, and the reason those two dyes were worth what they were worth is that they were fast. Fast means it does not run, does not fade in the sun, does not come out in the wash. That was the whole selling point. You could put a scarlet cloth through the water a hundred times and it came out scarlet, and everybody in the room hearing Isaiah say that would have known it the way you and I know that diesel does not come out of a shirt.
So God does not reach for a color that means bad. He reaches for the color that means permanent.
That is Him naming, before anybody can name it for themselves, the exact thing a man is standing at a trough about. Not the dirt. The dye. The kind that does not come out with water and effort and time and a brush worn down on one side.
You are clean in the one place where the color was never going to lift, and God chose that particular word so nobody would have to explain it to Him. Isaiah 1:18 says scarlet on purpose, and it is the Spirit of God who takes a written verdict and presses it into a man, so this does not stand or fall on how convinced you can make yourself feel by the barn.
Now watch what He does with it. He does not say the scarlet will fade. He does not say it will lighten in time. He says it shall be as white as snow, which is not a fading at all. That is a replacement. That is not the same cloth improved. That is the color changed by somebody with the authority to change it.
You have a new color on you that you did not achieve by any amount of going over the same six inches. It is written into the promise in the plainest terms, and the same Spirit who inspired it is the one carrying it out into a yard at dusk, so it holds on a night when nothing in you agrees.
Come now, and let us reason together
I want to stay on the first four words, because they are the strangest hospitality in the Bible.
Come now, and let us reason together. That is a legal phrase. It means let us take this to court. Let us set out the case.
You would expect what follows to be the charge sheet. God has just spent seventeen verses on what these people have done, and He is not being vague about it, and a reasonable man reading along braces for the sentence.
And then God argues the other side. He states the case against them in one clause and answers it in the next, in the same breath, and the answer is entirely His to give and entirely at His own cost.
That is not a judge who is soft. That is a judge who has decided to be the one who pays.
You were brought into a courtroom where the only person arguing your side was the judge Himself. Scripture puts the invitation and the verdict in the same verse, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to a settled case inside a man, so the argument still running in your chest is not the argument that decided it.
I want to put one thing here in the middle where you cannot miss it. If the standing at the trough has stretched out past eleven minutes and into the evenings, if the nights have gone long and the thinking has traveled past regret and out toward wishing you were not around, get a person alongside you. Ring your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If tonight is a dark one, call or text 988 or a crisis line and let another human being be in it with you. That is not the lesser road and it is not a soft spot in your faith. God has always worked through people, and one of them sitting across from you is part of what He is doing rather than a substitute for it.
Shall be
There is one more word in there worth stopping on, and it is a tense.
They shall be as white as snow.
Now a man who works outdoors reads a future tense and thinks weather. Shall be sounds like a forecast, and a forecast is a thing you wait on and squint at and doubt.
That is not what that is. In the mouth of a court, shall be is not a prediction. It is a disposal. It is the language of a judge stating what is now the case going forward by his own order. When a judge says the property shall be transferred, nobody in the room stands around wondering whether it will rain.
So the scarlet is not scheduled to come out. The color is ordered changed, by the only one with standing to order it, and the order is on the record.
You are white as snow by an order that was entered on the record, and no evening at a trough has the standing to appeal it. Isaiah 1:18 is a court speaking and not a sky, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a man, which is why he can hold it while his hands are still under the water.
And I am not going to tell you the eleven minutes stops tonight. That is not mine to hand out and I would not respect you for long if I did. What I am telling you is which of the two things is holding the weight. The order is. The eleven minutes never was.
You have a verdict standing over you tonight that does not consult the brush before it stands. It is written and it is entered, and it is His Spirit who makes an entered thing real inside a person, so a man can be clean at a trough with the water still running and nothing at all moving in him.
So here is the turn, and it is a short one, and it faces a man the other way.
Quit asking the water. Not because there is a thing wrong with washing. Because you can now say plainly what the washing was reaching for, and a man who knows what he is actually after stops going over the same six inches.
You are clean tonight, in the place under the skin where no spigot has ever run, and God is the one who says so. Isaiah 1:18 changes the color by order rather than by fading, and it is His Spirit and not the strength of your agreement who makes that word real in a man in his own yard.
And then the second thing, which is what lets a man go in and eat his supper.
You have nothing to add to it, and having nothing to add is not a shortfall in you. The written verdict rests on the judge who paid it, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on your feelings to sign the bottom of it, so the pull toward the trough can be on the place without being in charge of the place.
Declare this over yourself
You say this because of where you stand and not because of how the day went. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a man the right to speak over his own place. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a wore out voice carries them the same as a strong one. And what God does with the pull toward the trough is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.
- Wash trough behind the barn, you are a steel tank and you are not a court. Isaiah 1:18 says the scarlet shall be as white as snow, and that order was entered a long time before I ever came out here with the brush. In the name of Jesus you go back to being a place I rinse my arms, and nothing more than that.
- Feeling that the color is still on me, you have no right to stay on this ground. His word names the fast dye and changes it by order anyway, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to a settled case in me whether I can feel a thing about it tonight or not.
- Lord, You called me into court and then You argued my side Yourself, and Isaiah 1:18 has the whole exchange written down. I am taking You at it out here at dusk, and I am going in to my supper white as snow.
