The Thursday That Undid Sunday

This message is for the woman who felt clean on Sunday and by Thursday morning cannot locate any of it, and needs a cleanness that survives contact with an ordinary week

Sunday was good. Not remarkable, not a mountaintop, and she is not a person who talks like that anyway. It was a good service and something in the middle of it landed and she drove home lighter than she came.

By Thursday morning she cannot locate any of it.

Gwen is thirty two, and this is the pattern, and she has watched it for about three years now with the mild bafflement of somebody watching a car that will not start for a reason nobody can find.

Nothing happened. That is what she keeps coming back to. There was no crisis. Monday was ordinary. Tuesday had one difficult conversation but it was not a big one and it resolved. Wednesday was so unremarkable that she genuinely cannot remember any of it.

And on Thursday morning at ten past seven, standing at the counter with the kettle going and two lunch boxes to fill and a form to sign, whatever she had on Sunday is not findable.

She has stopped being frightened by it, mostly. What she has instead is a quiet arithmetic that runs in the background: something like one useful day in seven, and a suspicion that this is somehow her doing and that other people manage better.

If that is your Thursday, this is written for you. And I want to take you to the place in Scripture where the most quoted sentence about mornings was actually written, because almost nobody knows where it comes from.

The Thursday That Undid Sunday

Where that sentence sits

Here is the line.

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

That gets embroidered onto things. It is on mugs. It is a hymn and a good one.

It is in Lamentations.

Lamentations is five chapters of a man walking through the ruins of a city that has been destroyed, describing what he sees, and it does not resolve. It is the bleakest book in the Bible and it stays bleak, and the last verse of it is a question that nobody answers.

And in the exact middle of it, in the third chapter, in the middle of a passage where the same man has just finished saying that his strength and his hope are gone, he says: they are new every morning.

He is not in a good week. He is standing in rubble. He is not describing a season when things were going well and he could feel it.

You are holding a sentence that was written by a man in ruins rather than a man having a good week. Lamentations 3:23 sits at the center of the bleakest book there is, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written setting and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands at a counter on a Thursday.

And that matters enormously for a woman running an arithmetic in the background.

Because the quiet assumption underneath one useful day in seven is that the good stuff belongs to good conditions. Sunday works because Sunday is Sunday. Thursday does not because Thursday is Thursday.

The man who wrote that line had no good conditions at all, in any direction, for the entire length of the book. And he says new every morning, which includes the mornings in the rubble, which were all of them.

You have a sentence that was tested in conditions considerably worse than a Thursday. It is written from the middle of a ruin and not from a good stretch, and His Spirit is the one carrying a tested sentence into a life, which is why it holds at ten past seven with a form to sign.

They refers to something

Now the word at the front, because it points backward and almost nobody follows it.

They are new every morning.

They. That is a pronoun and it refers to whatever came in the previous line, and the previous line is: his compassions fail not.

So what is new every morning is not a feeling and not a spiritual condition and not anything located in the reader. It is His compassions. His mercies. The supply, not the reception.

That is a different claim from the one most people hear. Most people hear: you get a fresh start every morning, which puts the newness in the person and makes every morning a chance to do better, which is exhausting by Thursday and is a schedule nobody keeps.

The verse says the supply is renewed. Every morning. Regardless.

You have a supply that is renewed every morning rather than a fresh chance to perform. Scripture puts the newness on His compassions by a pronoun pointing back one line, and the same Spirit at work in that passage is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the arithmetic in the background has gotten louder, if a week has started to feel like a thing you are failing rather than a thing you are living, if the nights have been getting long or the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in your faith. God has always worked through people, and one across a table from you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

Thursday did not undo anything

Now the thing this whole site is for, and I want it said plainly.

Thursday did not undo Sunday.

Nothing about a week is capable of that. There is no arrangement in which an ordinary Wednesday, or a difficult conversation on a Tuesday that resolved, or a morning with two lunch boxes and a form, cancels a state that God declared.

What a week does is affect what you can feel. That is all. That is the entire mechanism and it is not a small thing to live with, but it is a completely different thing from a state being reversed, and those two have been conflated in the mind of nearly everybody who has ever tried to walk this out.

The state does not move with the week. The awareness of it does, and the awareness of it moves for reasons that are mostly about sleep and load and how many people needed something from you before eight in the morning.

And I want to be careful with the other half of that too, because this site does not hand out grades. A week where you cannot locate any of it is not a failed week. There is no examination. Nobody is scoring the days, and the idea that other people manage better is a story with no evidence behind it and it should be dropped without ceremony.

You are in the same state on Thursday that you were on Sunday, and no week has ever had the standing to change it. Lamentations 3:23 renews the supply every morning without reference to the day's quality, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you Thursday starts feeling like Sunday. It probably will not, and that is not a defect in you or in Thursday.

You are clean right now with nothing findable in you, and the not finding has never once been a witness. It is written and it is renewed, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a renewed thing real in a body.

The breakthrough

Here is the hinge of it, and it turns on where the newness sits.

The arithmetic has been about a state that comes and goes. The verse puts the newness on the supply, renewed every morning, in a book written from rubble, by a man who could not feel one thing.

You are supplied fresh this morning, whatever this morning is like. Lamentations 3:23 renews the compassions daily without reference to the day, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a woman at a counter with two lunch boxes open.

And the second, which is the one that lets a person get on with a Thursday.

You have nothing to keep hold of, and having nothing to keep hold of is not you letting something slip. The written supply is renewed at the source and never handed over for storage, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on a better week, so Thursday can be exactly what Thursday is.

Declare this over yourself

Say it from where you are standing, not because of what the week has been. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a person the right to speak over their own week. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a tired voice carries them as well as a strong one. And what God does about the feeling is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Thursday that undid Sunday, you are a weekday and you are not an undoing. Lamentations 3:23 was written by a man standing in the ruins of a city, and it says new every morning, which included every morning he had. In the name of Jesus you go back to being a Thursday, and I have lunch boxes to fill.
  2. Arithmetic of one good day in seven, you have no right to run in this kitchen. His word puts the newness on His compassions by a pronoun pointing back a line, and never once on my ability to find anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that in me at ten past seven.
  3. Lord, Your mercies are new every morning, and Lamentations 3:23 says great is Your faithfulness in the middle of the bleakest book there is. I am taking You at Your word at this counter, and I am going into Thursday clean.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
