He raked that stretch yesterday morning and it took him about fifty minutes.
Not for anybody. There is no job here and nobody pays him and hardly anybody comes down this end. He does it because a piece of beach raked flat at low water in the morning is one of the good things in the world, and because his uncle did it, and because it settles something in him that does not otherwise settle.
Keoni is thirty four.
He is standing above it now and the water is coming over the far edge of it and by half past six there will not be one mark left.
He knows the tide. He is not confused and he did not expect it to hold. This is not a man learning something about the sea.
It is that about a year ago, standing right here, he found himself thinking that this is what his weeks are, and the thought has been back every few days since. He gets a Sunday. He rakes it flat. The water comes in on Tuesday. By Thursday there is not one mark left and the whole thing has to be done again, and he has begun to wonder what the point of raking is.
If your week works like that, this is written for you. And I want to give you one word from a psalm, because it is the word a maker uses and it changes what the raking is for.

He knoweth our frame
Here is the line.
For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
The word behind frame is a making word. It is the noun from the verb for forming, the one used of a potter shaping a vessel, and it means the thing as formed, the shape it was made in.
So the sentence is not saying He knows we are weak, exactly, though that is in the neighborhood. It says He knows what we were made like. He knows the specification, because He wrote it.
That is a different kind of knowing from an observation.
An observer looks at a life and notes that a person keeps needing the same things and draws conclusions from the repetition. A maker looks at the same life and recognizes the design, because the repetition is what he built into it.
You are known by the one who wrote the specification rather than by somebody drawing conclusions from the repetition. Psalm 103:14 uses the potter word for what God knows about a person, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written knowing and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands standing above a beach.
And that lands directly on a man wondering what the point of raking is.
Because the wondering assumes that a thing which does not hold was badly done, and that a life needing the same thing every week has something wrong in it. And the maker's answer to that is: no, that is the shape. That is what I made. Daily bread was a daily provision on purpose, and manna could not be stored, and none of that was a design fault.
You are running exactly to specification rather than failing to hold. It is written as a maker's knowledge of what he formed, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written knowing into a life, which is why it holds standing over a stretch of sand at half past six.
Remembereth is a factoring in
Then the second half, and the verb there is doing something specific.
He remembereth that we are dust.
Remember in covenant language is not recall. It is acting on a thing, taking it into account, letting it bear on what happens next. When God remembers somebody, He moves.
So He does not merely have the information that we are dust. He factors it in. It is in the calculation, permanently, and it affects how He deals with people, and it is not something a person has to keep reminding Him of.
And notice what that removes. A great many people spend a great deal of energy explaining themselves to God, laying out the circumstances, making sure the constraints are understood, and it is exhausting and it is entirely unnecessary, because the constraints were factored in before anybody opened their mouth.
You have constraints that were factored in before you ever explained them. Scripture uses the covenant verb for acting on a thing rather than for holding it in mind, and the same Spirit at work in that psalm is the one testifying inside a person now.
Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the wondering has spread past the raking, if a week has started to feel pointless rather than ordinary, if the nights have been getting long or the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Call your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in anybody's faith. God has always worked through people.
The raking is not the point
Now the thing this category is for, and I want it plain standing over that water.
The raking was never supposed to hold.
Fifty minutes of it and by half past six there is nothing. That is not a failure of the raking and it is not a comment on the man. It is the sea doing what the sea does to sand, which is the entire arrangement, and it was never a competition anybody was losing.
And nothing in Scripture grades a week by what is still visible at the end of it. There is no passage that measures a believer by how much of Sunday survives to Thursday, and if there were it would reward people with quiet lives and light weeks, and nobody has ever wanted to write that down as doctrine.
A week that erases everything has erased nothing that God declared. The state is not made of sand. It is not the kind of thing that a tide reaches.
You are in the same state after the water comes in as you were before it. Psalm 103:14 has God working from the design rather than measuring anybody's endurance, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.
And I am not going to tell you the marks start holding. They will not. That is what the sea is.
You are clean right now with the water already over the far edge, and the tide has never once been a witness. It is written and it is known, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a known thing real in a body.
This is where it moves, and it turns on who is doing the knowing.
The wondering assumed a design fault. The verse says God knows the frame, in the word a potter uses about a vessel he shaped, and He factors the dust in before anybody explains it.
You are made this way on purpose, this evening, rather than falling short of a different design. Psalm 103:14 puts the knowing in the maker's terms, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a man standing above a stretch of raked sand.
And the second, which is the one that gets a man raking again on Saturday.
You have nothing to make hold, and having nothing to make hold is not you giving up on anything. The written knowing works from the specification rather than from anybody's endurance, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on a mark that lasts, so the tide can come in.
Declare this over yourself
You speak this out of where you stand, not because of what the week has erased. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a person the right to speak over their own week. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a quiet voice carries them as well as a strong one. And what God does about the marks is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.
- Tide over the raked sand, you are the sea and you are not a verdict. Psalm 103:14 says He knows our frame, in the word a potter uses about a thing he shaped, and He wrote the specification. In the name of Jesus you go back to being the tide, and I will rake it again on Saturday.
- Wondering what the point of it is, you have no right to stand on this beach. His word says He remembers that we are dust, and remember there means factored in, before I ever explained a thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that in me tonight.
- Lord, You know my frame, and Psalm 103:14 makes that a maker's knowledge and not an observer's conclusion. I am taking You at Your word above this water, and I am going down to the fire clean.
