Clean WithinPsalm 51:10

The Bath That Went Cold

This message is for the woman sitting in a bath gone cold because getting out means being the same person who got in, and needs to be made clean somewhere no washing reaches

The water was hot when she got in. She remembers that part clearly, the way it made her breathe in, the way she had to go slowly.

That was a while ago now.

Aoife is sitting with her knees up and her arms around them, and the water has gone from hot to warm to that flat neutral temperature where it stops being anything at all, and there is a thin line of condensation still on the tile that is starting to run. The faucet drips once, gathers, drips again. Down the hall the television is on for somebody else and the sound of it comes through the wall as a low uneven murmur with no words in it.

She could get out. There is a towel on the radiator and it will still have some warmth in it if she goes now.

The thing about getting out is that the person who gets out is the same person who got in. That is the whole of it, and she has never said it in those words to anybody, and if she tried it would sound dramatic, and it is not dramatic. It is quite flat. She has been aware of it for about twenty minutes.

She confessed the thing. Some time ago, and properly, and she was not casual about it and she was not vague. She believes God heard her.

She has run a lot of baths since then.

And here she is, in water that has gone cold, doing what somebody does when the getting out is the difficult part, which is nothing, for another minute, and then another one.

I am not going to hurry you out of the bath. If you have a version of this, whatever room it happens in, I want to sit with you here for a moment first, because there is something in the psalm everybody quotes at people like us that almost nobody points out, and it is not what you would expect, and it is the whole thing.

The Bath That Went Cold

He asked for the Genesis verb

Here is the line. It is the one people put on cards.

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Now, the word underneath create is bara. And bara is a strange word, because in the whole Hebrew Scripture it never once takes a human subject. Not once. Every single time it appears, the one doing it is God.

It is the verb in the first sentence of the Bible. In the beginning God created. It is the word for making a thing that was not there before out of no available material.

So when David reaches for it, he is not choosing a nice strong word for effect. He is choosing the one verb in his language that he is grammatically unable to perform.

Sit with that a second, because it changes what the whole psalm is doing. He is not asking to be helped. He is not asking to be strengthened for the attempt. He is asking for the one thing that has never once been done by anybody but God, and he is asking for it to be done in a place he cannot get to.

You are asking for something you were never equipped to do, and the asking is not a failure, it is the correct request. Psalm 51:10 uses bara on purpose and the word rules the human hand out by its own grammar, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written thing and makes it live in a person, so none of this rests on how convincingly you can feel it in cold water.

And notice where he asks for it. In me. Within me.

Not on me. Not around me. He does not ask for circumstances or for a better week or for the people in his life to look at him differently. He points at the interior and says the making has to happen there, which is precisely the place a person cannot reach with a bath.

You have a location named in that verse that no water has ever been able to get to, and God named it Himself. It is written as in me and within me, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written act into an interior, which is why this holds in a room where nothing at all is moving.

Create, not repair

Here is what I find kindest about it, and it took me years to see.

David could have asked God to repair his heart. That would have been a perfectly reasonable request. It would also have been, quietly, a much heavier one to carry, because a repair assumes there is enough of the original left to work with, and the person being repaired is always somewhere in the back of the room wondering whether there was.

Create does not assume that. Create needs nothing from the material. It is the only request in the world that a person can make without first having to assess whether they are worth the trouble of fixing.

That is a great mercy for anybody sitting in a bath doing the arithmetic on themselves. The arithmetic is not required. It was never part of the transaction. Nobody has to work out how much of them is salvageable before they can ask, because the verb in the request does not run on salvage.

You were never asked to establish that there was enough left, and the verb in that prayer makes the question unnecessary. Scripture puts bara in the mouth of a man at his lowest, and the same Spirit who moved over the waters at the beginning is the one testifying to a new making inside a person now.

I want to say something here in the middle of the teaching and not at the end of it, because it belongs in plain sight. If the getting out has become hard in a way that is lasting longer than an evening, if the nights have stretched and the thinking has traveled past regret and out toward wishing you were not here, please get somebody alongside you. Call a doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If tonight is dark, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another person be in it with you. That is not the lesser thing and it is not a weakness in your faith. God has always worked through people, and one sitting with you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

And renew a right spirit within me

The second half of the line is doing something the first half is not, and it is worth noticing because it is where the honesty is.

Create is a single decisive act. Renew is not. Renew is a word for something that goes on happening, and David asks for both in the same breath, which tells you he expected the settled thing and the ongoing thing to sit side by side in one life.

That is not a man hedging. That is a man being accurate about what a week is actually like.

So there is no contradiction between a heart that God has made clean and an evening that feels like this one. The psalm has both in a single sentence. It does not treat the second as evidence against the first.

You are not in an inconsistency, and the verse you have been measuring yourself against holds both halves without apology. Psalm 51:10 asks for the decisive act and the ongoing renewing together, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a room, so a flat evening does not overturn a settled thing.

And I will not tell you the water gets warm again tonight, or that you get out feeling different from the person who got in. That is not mine to promise you and I would not do that to you. The state and the feeling are two separate items and they do not always keep the same hours.

You have a clean heart tonight that God made, and the flatness in this room has no authority over the making. It is written and it is done, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a written thing real in a body.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is small, and it can be made without moving from that spot.

You do not have to become someone else before you get out. That was never the entry requirement and the water was never going to supply it.

You are clean, at this moment, in the interior, and God is the one who made it so. Psalm 51:10 uses the verb that only God has ever been the subject of, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a woman sitting in a cold bath with her arms round her knees.

And then the second thing, which is the one that gets a person up.

You have nothing to bring to it, and having nothing to bring is not a shortfall in you. The written prayer rules the human hand out by its own grammar, and the Spirit who answers it is not waiting for your feelings to sign underneath, so the flatness can be in the room without being in charge of the room.

The towel is still warm. Go on.

Declare this over yourself

Say this because of where you stand, not because of how the evening has gone. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a person the right to speak over their own life. Scripture is the ground under all three of these lines and the Holy Spirit carries them, so a small voice carries them exactly as well as a strong one. And what God does with the flatness is His to decide, spoken under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Bath gone cold around me, you are water and you are not a verdict. Psalm 51:10 asks God to create, which is a verb no person has ever been the subject of, and He answered it before I ever ran the water. In the name of Jesus you go back to being a bath, and I am getting out.
  2. Fear that the same person gets out who got in, you have no right to stay in this room. His word asks for a making and not a mending, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to a new heart in me whether I can feel anything about it tonight or not.
  3. Lord, You create, and Psalm 51:10 puts that word in my mouth because it was never a word my hands could do. I am taking You at Your word here in this cold water, and I am standing up clean.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
