The Calendar That Looks Well Ordered

It is genuinely a good system. That should be said first because it is true.

Six colors, one for each part of her life, and everything in it, and it syncs, and the whole month fits on one screen in a way that people have asked her to explain to them and she has, twice, and both of them gave up after a week.

Fionnuala is forty one. It has been running for nine years.

She could tell you what she is doing at four o'clock on the eleventh of next month.

Here is what is not on it. It is not that anything is hidden, exactly. It is that everything on there is a commitment to somebody else, and there is a category of thing that has never been on it in nine years and never will be, and it is the category containing everything that is actually hers.

She has known this for a while. The way she puts it to herself, when she puts it to herself at all, is that the calendar is the tidiest thing about her life and that it is tidy in the way a shop window is tidy.

She is a woman of real faith and it is not decorative. She prays. She would tell you God has all of her.

Except that there is a version of her life that runs well and is on a screen, and a version that does not and is not.

If that is your calendar, this is written for you. And I want to take you into a psalm that sounds like a bar and then, in the very next verse, stops being one.

It sounds like a bar

Here is the psalm.

It opens with a question. Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD, or who shall stand in his holy place. And then it answers.

He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

Now, read on its own that is a bar and a high one. Clean hands and a pure heart, and a person with a well ordered screen and a disordered life reads that and does the arithmetic and knows exactly where she comes out.

And then comes verse five, which almost nobody quotes with it.

He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Righteousness from God. Received.

That single word turns the whole passage inside out. The qualification named in verse four is not a standard a person arrives with. It is something verse five says gets received, from God, as a gift, by the very person the question was asked about.

So the psalm asks who can go up, describes the sort of person who can, and then says where that sort of person gets it from, and the answer is: from Him, as a gift, not from themselves as an achievement.

You are described by a qualification that the next verse says is received rather than achieved. Psalm 24:4 sets the description and Psalm 24:5 supplies the source, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written gift and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands at a kitchen table.

And I want to say why that matters for a woman with a colored screen.

A system person reads a standard and immediately builds toward it. That is not a flaw, it is a gift, and it is why she is trusted with things and why two people asked her to explain her calendar. Given a bar, she will construct something that clears it.

There is nothing here to construct toward. The next verse hands over the very thing the previous one described.

You have been handed the qualification rather than asked to build toward it. It is written as receiving in the following verse, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written gift into a life, which is why it holds looking at a screen that does not match a life.

Clean hands and a pure heart together

There is something in the pairing worth a minute.

Clean hands and a pure heart. Outside and inside, named together, in one line, as one description.

The psalm does not set them against each other. It does not say hands are worthless and only hearts count, which is the version most people have absorbed from somewhere. It names both, side by side, as parts of a single picture.

And that matters here, because a woman with a beautiful calendar has quietly begun to treat the ordered part of her life as evidence against her. Every colored block has started to read as an accusation, as proof of a gap.

They are not opposed in this psalm. Clean hands is a real thing and it is a good thing, and it appears in the same breath as the heart, and neither is being used to convict anybody of the other.

You have an ordered outside that Scripture names alongside the inside rather than against it. Scripture pairs the hands and the heart in a single description, and the same Spirit at work in that psalm is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the disordered part has been getting worse, if the category that is never on the calendar has been shrinking for years, if the nights have been getting long or the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in your faith. God has always worked through people, and one across a table from you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

The system is not the sin

Now the thing I most want to say, and I want to say it clearly because I think it has been getting quietly heavier for years.

The system is not the sin.

Nine years of a well kept calendar is nine years of showing up when she said she would, for a great many people, most of whom have no idea how much of their own life runs smoothly because of it. That is not vanity. That is service, in a form that does not look like service and therefore rarely gets called it.

And the fact that everything on it is a commitment to somebody else is not evidence of hollowness. It is evidence of a woman who has organized her life around other people, and the problem with that is not that it is a facade, the problem is that she is not on the list.

That is a completely different diagnosis and it leads somewhere completely different.

You have been serving in a form nobody names as service, and the ordering was never a facade. Psalm 24:4 names clean hands as a genuine good rather than a cover for anything, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you that you get onto your own calendar this year, or that the two versions converge on any schedule. That is not mine to promise you.

You are clean right now with the screen exactly as it is, and the calendar has never once been a witness against you. It is written and it is given, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a given thing real in a body.
